SPD Angle

Yesterday i went for my first (short) ride using my SPD M540 Pedals. Now despite a couple of missed engages i did feel fairly confident. The float position seems to be correct apart from one issue.

The angle seems weird. i.e my feet feel like my feet/toes are pointing in towards the bike. Should your feet be parallel to the bike or should they point in slightly? I cannot see how i could adjust the cleat to adjust this.

I use Specialized BG Sport MTB Shoes with the SH56 Cleats

  • Have you tried sitting on something that allows both feet to dangle freely? This should hopefully give you a ballpark idea about the angle to fix the cleats to your shoes, so that your normal cycling position feels comfortable for both your feet and the ankle joint.

The groove on the underside of the shoes should allow you to tweak the direction of the cleat before securing the allen screws tightly.

Its also worth experimenting with the fore-aft position of the cleat in the shoes groove... Some riders (like me) find it more comfortable to secure the cleat as close as possible to the middle of the shoe, rather than between the "ball" of your foot and your toes.

I have positioned mine on the ball of my foot. Just behind the first strap on the shoe.

I have just rechecked and i think my normal foot position on flats was slightly off and that's why I find these slightly weird.

I did try the furthest back position and just cold not click in.

Oh well fingers crossed for NO ice next weekend.

Read this on the bikeradar website about proper positioning of the cleats, amongst other things.

Oops that's not the actual cleat article   Useful nonetheless

Here's the 2 articles on knee care, the second of which goes into cleat fitting:

  • You can rotate the SPD cleats to some extent and of course there is a bit of float in the pedal once engaged. I pedale toes out, and have no problem aligning the cleat to about 10 degrees or so away from the striaght ahead position.
