Best? How much money do you want to spend?

A Digital SLR &/or HD camcorder would be amongst the best types of camera.

  • Stop being so pedantic people!!

I'm looking at getting one of the ATC 3K action cameras from firebox. Waterproof and have pretty good pictures and come with helmet mounting parts.
If you look in the commmuting section of the forums there is a "video your route" thread, and most people seem to be using the ATC 3K with very good results.

then you should have asked what is the best helmet mounted camera.
  • Sunday Times Ingear section has a feature on hemet-mounted cameras today.
Not read it properly yet, but Twenty20 VHOLDR and Oregon Scientific ATC 5K seem to be rated? Theres a water resistant (100ft) one for £160
    Could be worth a look?

As said above, today's Times "In Gear" supplement has a review of action cameras. The Oregon Scientific is poorly reviewed. The Vholdr wins overall and the GoPro Helmet Hero Wide gets 4/5. VIO POV.1 looks nice but its 500 quid!

My mates and I bought an Or Sci cam for a laugh. You can see the kind of results it'll give here.

The ATCs are all rubbish frankly, they're a good package until you get the dreaded ATC image tear/image shake, which happens to far too many of them. If they didn't do that, they'd be worth the money.

    ATC at its best:

Perfectly happy with this. Not happy with my lap  Still a bit jerky though.

    ATC at its worst:

No particular rhyme or reason as to why it does this- the footage in the 2 vids was done with the same camera, mount, and batteries. The newer ones have extra features but it's still the same core package, and that's where the defect is. I also found mine quickly developed a random powering off issue, which would sometimes not just stop the video in session, but blank anything else recorded up til it lost power. Very annoying.

Get a small digital recorder- something like the aiptek 8900 or a JXD media player- with an av-in, and a decent camera from a source like Dogcam. Or, if you don't mind the bulk, a mini-dv camera works better, but is cumbersome. It doesn't cost that much more than an ATC and the difference in quality is huge.

Of course, all 3 of these are compressed for Youtube so you can't see the real improvement in footage, but the higher quality footage does compress better in general- all 3 of these vids have the same compression rate. The only downer is the need for a battery pack for the camera- the camera and recorder alone aren't bulky but add 8 AA batteries and it's not so neat.

who says i want to mount it to my bike helmet?

that was kinda my original point. if you dont want to mount it on a helmet then what you are looking for a decent video camera. but, since you didnt specify a price or the features you wanted on it it makes it impossible for us to give any useful advice.

if its a DSLR you want then I would recommend the Samsung GX10. its around £650-£700. its a Pentax K10 with a slightly different editing suite and an extra lens for the same money. I use it and i love it.

its its a video camera youre looking for then you have to give us some more info, like I said before.

saying 'whats the best camera' doesnt help at all as there are hundreds of different cameras out there, we're not psychic.

Tachyon XC has a couple of good writeups and also comes out very favourably against the ATC range on a few YouTube reviews.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

Good to see people giving constructive advice!

I have a GoPro Hero which came with a helmet mount and then purchased a bike mount to go with it for flexibility. Results so far are pretty good although I have found the audio to be very muffled due to the very good waterproof casing that the camera fits into so it's well protected but suffers for it in the audio department. High speed capture is pretty good for a small lens and you don't get too much jumping around as it has some pretty good vibration compensation, again though you do need a decent amount of light for good results as I found in Thetford on the singletrack, video came out a bit on the dark side.

Should you buy one , maybe but depends on what you want it for and your budget as they are £130, don't buy it if you want really high quality results as you will not get them but for fun and general messing about it's a good sturdy camera which can take the rough and tumble of MTB.

Recently got a Lumix tz5 - 10x optical zoom, brilliant "action" modes and takes superb pics even when just doing quick snaps.
Not exactly super sturdy but tough enough, especially with a decent case.

Was £300, now about £200 from most places - probably the best compact you can buy. All the reviews put it right at the top.

Got an ATC3K for £80 [using a £5 off code] from Wiggle.

Pretty happy with it for that price. Taken it underwater in Sharm too, and it performed very well. Sound is next to nothing, but dont exactly want the grunts of me bombing down a run.

the ATCs are pretty cack..if you must do the all in one then the Vholdr wins hands down.

something like this is probably worth the small amount extra http://www.actioncameras.co.uk/product. ... 281&page=1

or also look at dogcams ones
