Platform pedal shoes?

Afternoon!!!

I usually just wear an old pair of vans while riding as i have DMR V12 pedals. As my shoes are falling to bits i thought i'd theat myself to a proper pair of mtb shoes.

I would really like a pair of Five Ten Sam Hill shoes but i don't see the point of paying £85 on some thing i'm gonna get soaked and covered in mud. So..... i like the look of these: http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/115096.html. My question is: does anyone have these and if so, are they good (comfortable, grippy etc)? Also, can anyone suggest anything similar i should look at?

Thanks,

Ben :D

like you, i usually wear vans or dc/emerica/etnies and so on. mainly because theyre comfy and have a hardish sole that allows me to put the power down when I have too, but partly because i dont look or feel like a tool when I have to get off the bike and walk someplace.

at this time of year you can get a decent pair of skate shoes in the sales (or in tk maxx) for about £20-£25 that will last you all year and longer.

I just made the jump to five tens, though just the Basics, not the full impacts. Don't really know why I bothered, they're not particularily well made and the sticky sole doesn't give me any benefit that I can tell, since I don't have any grip problems with my old Vans. The sole's a little stiffer but so far that just makes them annoying to walk in  In their defence though, the uppers do shed mud very very well, I came home looking like I'd stepped in a swamp (I had) but a quick lick of the hose and they're almost as good as new. Still, not impressed. Maybe the Impacts are better but the sole grip that everyone raves about is just hype, to me.

  • To be honest, my etnies get shredded when I ride in them, the pedal pins ruin the soles and they are a bit too soft and so give less support to my feet than my fivetens. I will always use proper bike shoes now and having tried others, I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking to fivetens!

But it's up to you, they are a lot more expensive than skate style shoes and if you don't have any issues with support then maybe it's not worth it.

Hmm, that was a wee bit of a rant now I read it again :) The reason I'm down on 5-10s is that I think the sole grip, which is what everyone raves about, is a bit pointless when regular soles can give more than enough. But, all I have is the Basics- while the sole rubber is the same, and they're stiffer than most skate shoes, they're not as stiff or as engineered as the Impacts. So, if the stiffer sole, heavier support, stronger toebox etc is all worthwhile for you then that's a big plus for the 5-10s. But if it's just grip you're after, and that's mainly what they're known for, then I personally think it's overrated compared to a good skate shoe. But it's not as black and white as I said before, that was irritation with spending money on something that doesn't really work for me talking tbh, rather than a fair review.

thanks guys, given me some things to think about. Think have a poke around the skate shops and see what i can get cheapish. But as its sale season not sure if they will have my size being i'm a rather common size 9! If that is fruitless is shall give the shimano ones i found a crack.

    Ta,
