Abandoned bike

While I was out this afternoon I came across a dumped British Eagle mixte frame, Reynolds 531 steel in very good condition wrapped in a bin liner and thrown by the side of the road, very small frame in blue white and pink, no rust or dents and crankset in good condition.

What a shame to just throw that away. That's the second bike I've seen dumped in two weeks.

If anyone is interested in the frame I'll go back and pick it up tomorrow.

Umm, but I value my life...

My local borough has a bike recycling scheme run by the council. Mechanics do them up or you can buy them and do them up using their workshop - donation of £3 a session and nominal prices for anything you want to buy from the hundreds of bikes there. (I go there as my borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign use the facility once a month so I help staff it. You'd be amazed at some of the things that get thrown out - and others you'd be amazed that the staff want to keep them!

It was a sky blue girls bike from Halfords whilst not surprising that some would throw it away it is surprising where is was dumped, I mean I live in the middle of nowhere and that particular bike was in a bush down a private farm road a good 5 miles from the nearest main road, I passed it the first time and assumed the owner was nearby but when it was still there later in the week I had a quick check just in case the rider had been injured, nope nothing.

Why take you're old bike and dump it in the beautiful and remote countryside location ???

So no taker for the mixte then?

  • Ooh any idea what size the frame is, I'm thinking it'd be a nice fixed build for the g/friend.

Not sure how to measure a mixte frame but here goes, 17.5" from BB to seat tube, 20.5" top tube

If you're interested it's yours for the cost of postage, I really don't need any more bikes.

  • HI, It looks good and I;d love to take you up on your generous offer.

I'm just thinking about that seat tube height though, 17.5" seems really small but maybe this is normal for mixte frames. I presume you're measuring top tube as a straight line from the top of the headtube to the top of the seat tube or are you measuring it on the diagonal?

Hmm I think this frame would make a great build but I'm wondering if it's too small. (she's ~5'6")

Build it up and ride it to SCR b'day drinks, just think of the FCN gains scalping LiT et al on it.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

  • Ooh my light tourer is a mixte. I'm extremely fond of it. It was a tip rescue and was lovingly restored by the person I bought it from, it is now a lovely deep purple colour.

Mine is 531 and pretty flexy but ok as long as you don't try heavy touring. And it's lighter than my hybrid.

I don't know about that frame but mine fits 27 inch wheels.
  • Sounds great Totalnewbie, got any pics you could share? Are you using 27" on it or 700c?

It has a much nicer saddle now, a leather Selle-Anatomica with copper studs, which suits me (and it) much better. Oh and spds of course.

It is an Eclipse, a defunct 80s brand of tourer.

I have 27 inch wheels because that is what they came with, and it is not impossible to get tyres for them, my LBS have got more obscure sizes than that in for me. When they are knackered, LBS said it may be possible to fit 700s depending on if we can adjust the canti brakes to fit, but looking at where the bosses are it might be tricky and I'm not at all sure it will work.

Before anyone helpfully informs me that my stem is too high and unsafe, it's a special extra tall Nitto one

    Well well well...

I had a bike like this (my sister's long abandoned Raleigh Wisp).

I err sort of borrowed it a bit and made this with it......
