Hello all, I have just been offered a secondhand Trek 1400 for £200 including lights, lock etc. I currently commute on Gary Fisher mountain bike but want something a bit quicker for weekend use. The Trek is in very good condition. Any views please? Thanks, Charles

I have a 2005 Trek 1200 - the model below - and it's been an excellent steed, reliable, solid and upgradeable. Sounds like a bargain to me - almost too much of one! How old is it?
  • I think 3-4 years

If it genuinely is in good condition (i.e. nothing needs immediately replacing, it hasn't been crashed) - and most importantly it fits you (you might be able to get away with a size too small or a size too big with adjustments of equipment swaps but it's far from ideal), then it sounds like a steal. Things usually aren't too good to be true, though - who is offering it to you?
  • It's a guy who works just round the corner from me. I'm picking it up from his office on Monday so nothing dodgy about it (I hope !)

Seriously though - have a decent test ride, if you haven't already, and don't compromise on the sizing. Otherwise in a couple of week it'll be you flogging it (though I reckon you could get another £50-£100 no worries :) )
  • Thanks for the advice, I will do and will report back Monday pm !

I've got an '05 Trek 1400 triple. I paid £600 for it when they were on offer at Buy a Bike back in June 2005. I have covered over 10,000 miles on it and it's basically been 100% sound. I replaced the wheels (Bontrager Select) after 9,000 when a spoke went on the rear and feedback seems to say that if you're heavy, you'll want to upgrade them. The problem I have now is that the O ring at the bottom of the headset has broken and maybe I need to replace the whole headset. Reading up on it, it sounds like headset problems are quite common on these and replacements not always easy to find, so I guess you would be wise to pay attention to this side of things before parting with cash.

  • I bought a 2006 Trek 1200 in immaculate condition for £300 about 4 months back,which is a lower spec.
Take a look at pic below. If its in good nick,£200 sounds a verygood price.
Very pleased with mine.I tried a few new bikes before I bought mine and I thought the Trek compared favourably with new £600-700 bikes.
