Rockshoxs internal problem.. warranty claim?

Hi there..

My brand new (well 1 month old) 2009 Revelation 426 Dual Air (Black) fork seem to have developed a problem ...

They are fitted with a poploc, and were expertly fitted by my local bike shop ok. They worked fine up until today!

Normall, to lock/unlock compression, you have to use the Poploc to open/close the compression ring on top of the crown, which seems to be spring loaded (ie, it springs back when the poploc is released, pushes back against poploc to lock).

The 'spring' seems to be broken, as now the compression ring suddenly became unsprung (it flips round either way with no resistance).

Is this a warranty claim with the place of purchase? If so, does anyone suspect they might know what the fualty part is?

KK.

Yes, there is a spring in the damper assembly that does this.

Contact the place of purchase. It may be fiaxble at home but would require you to take the damper out.

Super, It was purchased mail order, and so I have to post it back to them (once they have replied to my email of course!)

What exactly should I say I suspect the problem to be??

"Faulty damper spring"? What is the name of that 'spring'?

Cheers mate. I cannot beleive this happened to me, I'm getting alot of bad luck recently!

    KK.

P.S: just for the record, these forks are just a month old and have NOT in any way been misused, damaged or tempered with.

Just say what you have in that first post! That the poplock topcap has lost its springback.

Righto mate, I just sent that email off saying that. I'll let you know how I get on.

IF they just gave me a full refund, and I had to by more forks, would you choose the 426 dual airs again, or the 426 U-turns? Mechanically which is the more solid and sound?
    I do like the Revelations.

They will repair them, trust me ;-)

The Uturn probably a bit more robust, but your current problem is unrelated to the spring.
  • Things break.

My Revelations have been flawless for the last 18 months, so don't let 1 bad experience put you off them. They're great forks.

Thanks Joe, I know. I am just totally gutted :( that this happened just one month after I bought them new, and I haven't even ridden them off road at all yet..! Oh well.

Super: I hope they repair them. Surely it will take weeks for them to be sent away and then returned....? My bike is in the garage for some time I think! *weep*

Something my proper bike shop noticed about them though, is that there is NO serial number on them! Should be located on back of the crown, they said...? That's worrying!

  • The Dual Air is more robust than the U-turn - this is reasonably well documented. Dual air has larger air chambers too which give a better spring characteristic.

For the sake of travel adjust you compromise other areas of function. The only reason to get U-turn is if you need travel adjust.
  • Mine are the coil versions.
I wanted a fork that I could fit and forget and that's exactly how they've been.
I'd happily recommend them to anyone.

The serial number should be on the back of the right hand fork leg, see below.

  • Have you checked that the cable hasn't come loose where it attaches to the forks? It is only held in by a tiny grub screw.

    Just a thought.

Tank, no it is definatly not that, but a good thought.
My problem has now been confirmed, it is definatly an internal compression ring spring.
They are being returned tomorrow under warranty for either replacement or repair.

I am not sure what to do in the meantime, might buy a second pair, maybe the rev u-turns this time.

Update for those interested, I just got an apologetic email from retailer saying sorry for the lack of serial number. With that in mind, they have offered a full refund. That means if I like, I am sorted, with the option of quickly buying a different version.

They also tell me this is a "fairly common problem" with RS.

  • As I said earlier, I bought the coil version for it's simplicity and durability and I'd buy a set again. They are probably the best part of my bike to be honest.
