hi guys,
the 3rd smallest sprocket on my rear cassette rotates a couple mm by hand. i noticed it this afternoon when i gave the chain, mech, cassette a really good de-gunge. is it a sign of severe wear or just needs tightening. its shimano hyper glide. is it an urgent matter or get to it when the weather is better thing

cheers

Sounds like it has become loose.

Take cassette off the hub, check for any sign or damage/ware on the splines of the freehub, if damaged hub/freehub needs replacing.

If there is no sign of damage re-install cassette and tighten. Job done.

Sounds damaged to be honest. There shouldn't be a lot of (or any) play between the free hub body and the cassette. If it was normal manufacturing tolerances I would expect the whole cassette to slightly slack, not just one sprocket.

What's the hub make and what's the cassette. Steel cassettes on high end hubs (Hope for example) can damage the freehub body.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

It oddly happened to me once, just needed to nip up the cassette.
