I've found that I can only deal with putting my left foot down, and using my right foot to set off with. If I try to stop leaving the left foot on the pedal and putting down the right foot, I tend to be very close to toppling over! Is this normal, or as expected, a bit crap?
This is perfectly normal. Most people have a "dominant" foot/leg, just as they have a dominant hand and eye. I believe it's supposed to be something to do with our brains (if any). I'm right-foot dominant, and do exactly the same as you. I always unclip and put down the left foot first, and get under way from rest by pushing down on the raised right pedal while jumping up and forward off my left foot.

Well i guess i'm a bit wierd, I'm left foot dominant, in that i trackstand left foot forward easiest, when i'm jumping on my bike left foot forward, and i can turn in the air easiest to the left. But I'm right handed, and put my left foot down at lights and always start off with my right foot.

I'm exactly the same. My left foot's my chocolate foot on my MTB, always has been.

I'm left handed but put my left foot down at lights (usually).
I also have my brakes the opposite way round to most people.

...you gotta cycle in France(or any where they ride on the righthand side of the road) then you have to sort yerself out, 'cause everything is round the other way...
...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...
  • I'm a left foot down and right foot pedal push man myself. I can do both but naturally put the left down so I don't fall into traffic (and I'm not even clipless :P )

I used to be able to mount the bike from either side but haven't tried from the chain side for a v long time - may have to give it a go tomorrow.

    So Sara - perfectly normal.
