Job Relocating

Owing to current job dissatisfaction I’ve been looking at relocating - nothing radical, just 40 miles down the road nearer the Missus. I’m familiar with the place as I virtually live there at the weekend, like it a lot and there’s plenty of decent priced rentals. I’ve seen a few vacancies from within my area of ‘expertise’ (ahem…) and am considering firing some applications off.
So, do employers look favourably on job applications from out of town (shows commitment)? Or are they apprehensive (may bugger off back where he came from)?

I'd doubt employers will be too bothered so long as you can prove that you'll be in work on time like teh guy who lives around the corner.0

Depends on the employer. Mine was impressed enough to take me on permanently based on an e-mailed CV and one informal interview, and hey presto, I ended up relocating to Hampshire all the way from West Yorks. (without any major decline in quality of life, as there are a couple of pubs round here that serve Landlord )!

I don't think that it'll make a blind bit of difference. At interview it MIGHT be worth mentioning that your personal circumstances mean that you're moving to the area anyway but as long as you'll do a good job and plan to be around for a while I think that most employers would be happy.0

People commute much more than 40 miles, so I don't suppose they would be too concerned. Maybe an issue if you were expected to be on emergency call or something like that.
When you are interviewed though, don't mention that you are applying for the job so that you can be near the missus. Makes it sound like you're not really that interested in the job. Go on about what you can bring the job, how much you want to work for them because they are such a far sighted, well run company with a great reputation in the industry. If only they had your demonstrated capabilities inside the organisation the sky would be the limit for them. And what a bonus to be able to move to such a great part of the country, which would also reduce the company's carbon footprint (nobody realy knows what this means, unless its a coal mine, in which case say you'll clear up any carbon footprints after yourself).
Also drop in the conversation that it has been proven that cyclists take fewer days sick leave than non-cyclists, and are generally more motivated in their work.
Good luck0 -
I am not too sure that your chosen mode of commuting is of any relevance to an employer, really. I wish it were different, but some (just some) people would consider your cycling as a problem, not believing that you will arrive reliably at work, in good condition, and unscathed. There is a lot of prejudice based on ignorance. I wouldn't raise the issue myself.0

As an ex-Heywood resident, why on earth would you want to leave Rochdale?!
Bear in mind that if you're moving to Yorkshire they won't be able to understand you.
Other than that, go for it - I did (Heywood's a doss-hole!)Head Hands Heart Lungs Legs0 -

Ha ha, that's exactly where my g/f moved from! I'm looking at heading to Preston so they speak the same language...0 -
Chris,
"that's exactly where my g/f moved from!"
Whereabouts did she live? Was it the posh bit down Queen's Park Road or somewhere rough like Darn Hill?Head Hands Heart Lungs Legs0 -
It was down - I think - Newhouse Lane. It was a bit posh (when you live in Milnrow everywhere's posh).
It's quite funny really - sometimes she'll deny it's 'Heywood' ("It's technically Hopwood...") and sometimes she'll make out she was born and raised in a hood-like environment straight out of 'The Wire'. Bless.
Bet you don't miss it much, Steve?0 -

Did she move there to get away from you?0 -

I made the switch from the Norfolk/Suffolk border to Greater Manchester a year ago and alot of employers wouldnt even phone me back after i contacted them.Alot of agencies told me its because i was still living down south at the time and they didnt want to take the risk.
It was ridiculous in my eyes but eventually a company took the chance and i managed to find myself a job.
Good luck0 -
Had the same problem a few years ago. If you think it is going to be an issue, use the missus' address. You said you practically live there at weekends so can pick up any post. Plus, if you're definitely going to move down there, who cares?
As far as I am aware, no employers would run a search on your current address and they never care about it once you start work...
Just a theory - some people might be too honest but there you go...0 -
My OH applied for a job about 100 miles away and the employers had no problem (relocation was part of the package). But as a result of her job I had to start looking for a new one in the same area - which I was happy with because I couldn't stand my old job!
I applied for my current job while I still lived in the North and they offered me the job without any worry about me moving. It may have been more convincing because I was moving back to an area I lived in previously - although my OH getting a job down here wasn't a planned quest to move back to the area.
As for the cycling thing, it's a tough one. My MD cringes when he see's me in my cycling gear as he just thinks I'm dicing with death as the commute is 20 miles on busy roads - I only do it in fair weather though!0 -

Moving over to Gods Country eh?
Whereabouts in Preston? Good bits and bad bits as in most places, but towards the North you have got easy access to some of the best cycling country in England!!0 -
My g/f lives city centre - just near Avenham Park.
I know what you mean about great cycling country; a couple of months ago I took the bike over there and popped out on a Saturday morning. I headed to where I thought some countryside might be and found myself around Ribble Valley / Trough of Bowland. Stunning scenery and quiet well-maintained roads. It wasn't the best planned route I've ever been on (at one point I headed towards Dinckley simply because it sounded quite charming...) but certainly one of the most picturesque!0 -
Hi Chris,
Sorry for the delayed reply, but I've been organising this:
http://www.scmp.com/portal/site/SCMP/me ... een&s=Life
which is on this weekend.
I know Newhouse Rd well - I used to go to Siddal Moor High school, which is on Newhouse Rd. It is one of the nicer areas of Heywood. Having said that, St Joey's Catholic school's down the other end of the road. I lived on Magdala St, near Hopwood Rec. Oddly, I was on a course on a tiny island off HK last September and met a bloke who's Mum had lived next door to us! Ah well, just goes to show that if there's a way out of Heywood you've got to take it. It apparently has the highest number of pubs per head of population in England, which gives you an idea of the recreational options...Preston must seem like Monte Carlo by comparison.Head Hands Heart Lungs Legs0
