Am thinking of getting some blingy carbon deep section >/= 50mm for time trialling with, but at 100kgs not everfything is suitable. I dont want to pay stupid money either so whiclst zipp 404's or 808's would be great they don't represent VFM for me in this case (I dont want wont do enough TTing).

Was considering the Pro (shimano brand) 50's, Pro-lite 50's which seem reasonably priced from CRC, the planet x 50's, and cosmic carbone's
Anyone got any experience/recommendations - remember I'm heavy so that rules some wheelsets out.

What about Dalkiia SixZero? 60mm deep, relatively cheap at £540 new. I just got some barely used second hand for £380 (with a DA cassette thrown in). Not ridden them yet, but seem to fit your requirements perfectly. They are no featherweights (they claim 1750g, but are in reality 1870g on my scales) but feel like a solid set alright. They have an alu brake surface as well so you'll be able to stop.

    Try www.wheelsmith.co.uk

he can build 50mm Gigantex rims (same as Planet X ones) onto various hubs, configurations etc. He's an excellent builder and his prices are good too.

What about the deeper P-X carbon wheels, the 82mm and 101mm?

At your weight you will need plenty of spokes, for many rims even 28 spokes on a deep rim at the back could be a pain. Also full carbon isn't essential, you need strength.

So instead, I'd look at some Mavic Cosmics: strong and aero but suitable for your weight.
  • How about something from the HED range?, the Jet 50 or 60 would seem to fit the bill and they make a heavier rider version of both for riders up to 16st (225lbs) (102kgs).

Same hubs as Dalkiias (HED Sonic), same weight and rim profile, but c.£900 instead of £550. What are you getting for the extra £350?

Cosmic Carbones are c.£750 - with a shallower rim and similar weight to Dalkiias. What are you getting for the extra £200?

I know I'm sounding like I have shares in Dalkiia

Poor braking and not great on windy days.

    Unlike the Dalkiias
  • similar advce on the carbones from timetriallingforum. A couple of friends have them, ive ridden them so know they are good
sounds like they are the answer...
  • Got my Cosmic Carbones off eBay

    Just looked what's on now:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAVIC-COSMIC-CARB ... 240%3A1318

Get a bid on! (And no, I've nothing to do with the seller)
  • saw them! but sadly on a campag hub......

however, CRC are selling the 2009 SL's for £650 a pair, just none in stock yet.....

I was thinking of some Cosmic Carbones, which seem to be retailing at just over £700 new from various places at the moment (quite a bit cheaper than last year).

I've read lots of comments about these wheels over the years, and the majority seem to be positive.
  • HOw about a pair of Vuelta Carbon Pro's for £500?

t'ebay and shiny bikes are doing them, spoke count is very low at 12/16 but they look pretty chunky. BR review says they are strong (but then Paul Vincent seems to say that of about 90% of wheels tested....)

    Yes, I've seen them.

To be honest, I've gone round the houses several times over the past year about what to get, and have pretty much considered all aero clinchers - from Dalkiia's to Reynolds.

I'll probably just buy something on the spur of the moment in the end, but the Carbone's are currently my fvourites.
  • am so tempted so just say flock it and get some zipp 404's in clydesdale guise.....
  • Steve - if you're willing to drop the cash on a set of zipp 404 clydes, then it would be worth having a chat to barry @ bespoke cycling about a custom set of edge composites.

I got a set from him last year and they're fairly amazing. they don't need any special laminate etc to have no rider weight limit. you can also get them in clincher for a much less weight penalty than the zipps. can post up a pic of mine if you're interested.

I'd disagree if you're on the larger size - I'm 6ft + 13 stone and don't get blown around with mine......

Zipp don't have a fantastic reputation for quality or durability - Reynolds are probably the strongest, but pricey. I'd got to Wheelsmith - get the rear built with 28 or 32 spokes for strength - aero benefits of fewer spokes on the rear are marginal. AFAIK Planet-X, HED, Dalkia all use the same Gigantex rims. Corima rims also have a great reputation - used by Campagnolo / Fulcrum.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • ....hmmm....fast forward F6R on DT 240 hubs look very tempting at buy now pay (when youve been made redundant) in 12 months time...
  • The new Dura Ace carbons are getting sme god reviews, but they are pretty difficult to find....
  • edge composites 1.0 68mm deep built with cx rays and dt 240s. approx 1200 grams.

At 24mm deep? How are these relevant (even though it's your thread!)?

I got my new Dalkaii six-zero wheels yesterday, they really look the biz. Am hoping to get out tomorrow for an hour to try them out, but with windforce 6, expected and rain am not to optimistic. If i manage to get out i will certainly leave feedback as to performance e.t.c.but as its my first pair of deep section wheels i cant compare them to anything other than my current wheels, aka CAMPAG kHAMSINS and bloody heavy. Will post a pikkie of my bike tomorrow with new wheels, looks good to me.

  • OK decided to it properly. It's dwn to either a Fast Forward Tri-spoke and rear Disc, or a Pro 4 Rays carbon 4 spoke and rear disc. Going to use tubs too, so lookout wet braking! I decided that Im going to use the wheels for mostly TTing so might as well do it properly.

Re Dura Ace - yes I meant the new 50mm carbon versions.

    How did you get on?

I ordered the Pro disc and the 4 rays front quad spoke yesterday, if the weather is ok (read dry roads) then I will hopefully get to try them out...
