I've just ordered my second custom steel frame from Paul Hewitt.

My first frame was measured for by Paul but built elsewhere. It fitted perfectly and has been a pleasure to ride from the day it arrived.
Frame building is now done in house, and to a very high standard.

A frame in Columbus Life Niobium tubing with carbon forks is around £900. I am going for Easton SLX forks so am paying an extra £160 for those.
The frames I have seen there were absolutely beautiful, and the standard of workmanship looks to be top notch. Add to that Paul's bike fitting and you have a real winner!
I've gone for a Ferrari red finish with white panels.
    Roll on mid March.

Having been measured up late last year with Paul Hewitt, i have every confidence that you will have a first class bike when ready. Don't forget those piccies now, will you .....

I've just realised that my first post was a bit misleading. This will be my second 'Hewitt' bike, its just that at the time I bought my first one the framebuilding was not 'in house'.
I only realise how well it fits me when I get on another bike and can't get comfortable.
Roll on March and something even better!

Has anyone said "Pegoretti" ( www.pegoretticicli.com ) yet? By all accounts they are "la creme de la creme" (that's french for "the daddy") of steel custom handmade frames.

Would have to agree with that last post on Pegoretti. Mosquito do them and I've never heard a bad word about them. Robert Miller reviewed a couple in Pro Cycling some years back and have always been a dream bike for me.

Or ... have a look at Mercian's bikes. I crashed a pro-lugless fixed gear a yer ago and got it repaired by them at virtually the cost of a new frame just because I loved the ride of that bike so much. And I'm now waiting for a second pro-lugless from them to run as a regular geared bike.

Good prices compared to many other steel builders too.
  • +1 for Rourkie
Had my 953 for a little over a year now and it fits like a glove and rides like a dream. I normally suffer big time with back ache, shoulder pain and knumbness when going over 100m. Did the Dave Lloyd Mega this year and the only thing that hurt where my legs! Finish is fantastic as well

Pegoretti-I know exactlt what you mean. I rode up a hill with a bloke on a yellow Marcelo on the Dragon ride last year. He said it had taken 18 months from ordering, but he loved it. I just can't wait that long/justify the circa £1600/afford it.

Following the tip above I looked for Simoncini bikes: good tubing and excellent price from a place in Herefordshire called Cycles Clements. Not custom, but Italian...any advice?

What tubes did you have? What was the ride of the pro lugless like?
