Wrong kind of Campag cassette?

Help! I though I was a fairly knowledgable diy bike mechanic... but...
I bought a Veloce 10s cassette to replace the old (4yrs) chorus 10s cassette on my Mavic Ksyrium SSCs (also about 4yrs old). But the new cassette won't fit? It's clearly for a smaller diameter freehub. I always thought that there were just two types of freehub, Campag or Shimano. Why is life so difficult.

  • I now know why life is so difficult...clearly for four years I've been riding what I thought was a campag cassette on a campag equiped bike. Obvious you would think, but no, it appears that the un-named dealer fitted a shimano freehubed mavic wheel to the bike.
I have just tried a 105 cassette and it fits. I feel a bit of a muppet now but clearly I was dupped.
This also goes to prove that a shimano cassette will work with campag gears, which I have heard in the past.
Anyone want to buy a veloce cassette :(

You might be better off getting a new freehub body and keeping your Veloce cassette, it's up to you.

'Course, if you do decide that you want rid of the cassette, letting me know the ratios and price would be handy. ;)

It may be a respaced shimano cassette - I had one a few years back when I used Campag on a shimano freehub on Kysriums I did swap the freehub over as suggested eventually when I bought a new Groupset.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

According to a few posters on here and my LBS, 10 speed Campag shifters and mech will index perfectly with a Shimano cassette.
  • Thanks guys, I'll weigh up my options... I might get the replacement freehub as it's still probably smoother to run a campag cassette with a campag group. I guess the old cassette may well have had different spacers to make it work, because whether campag/shimano interact or not, technically they have slightly different spacing between the spockets.

9 speed should be even easier to do, as everything's wider. I did actually run a 9 speed Shimano cassette with Camapg gearing, and it did work, sort of. It needed to be absolutely perfectly indexed, a sixteenth of a turn too much/too little tension and it would fail dismally. Using a Campag spaced cassette is a whole lot easier and smoother.

I use Campag' down-tube friction shifters with a 10 speed Shimano cassette and it works fine...

    ....i'll get my coat....

    If it's a 11-25 or 12-25 10 speed then yes, I am interested
