My bike seems to go into most gears ok but sometimes I will be riding and it will change gear without me me doing anything.

Also in one of the gears it may take a few moments to go into gear.

I only have a 8 speed gear system, shimano deore rear changer and rear cassette and a single dmr on the front.

Is this a changer issue or could it be my chain?

Thanks

Best asked in the technical section but sounds just like the cable needs adjusting

If its changing to a smaller cog, ie up to a higher gear by itself then wind the barrel adjuster on the shifter out a bit. If its going the other way and shifting to a bigger cog ie a lower gear by itself then wind the adjuster in a bit. Saying that, Shimano ones have adjusters on the mech as well so try their first. The top jockey wheel should line up perfectly with whatever cog on the cassette its under, if its not then adjust the barrel adjuster on the mech where teh cable goes through and watch it move until you get it in the right place

dirty cables, bent mech hanger, poor cable routing can all give these results.

Sounds like time for a service.

  • look at your shifters, there is a square-ish dial that you can turn a tit adjusts the tension, bent mech hanger could be the problem, although unlikely, probablly best to fit new inners and outers for your cables

Thanks for the info I will take a look.

How much should I expect a service to cost at a local bike shop?
  • If the shift levers have a heavy action and you can't remember when the cables were changed, change the cables. It makes a huge difference.

Agree with nicklouse: dirty cables, poor cable routing, bent hanger
