Hi all,

About 2 years ago i was biking rutland water 2-3 times a week an my PB from the libary back to the libary in Oakham was 1hr 6min excluding the peninsula so that just 17mile ish

If you guys have done it just woundering what your times was an which way do you thinks easier (going to barnsdale first or manton)

And i am considering doing the hole rez including the peninsula which will be about 28mile
But cant make up my mind which to do first the rez or the peninsula,

I personaly think the peninsula is just as hard as doing the rez even tho its 7mile less its pretty demanding an theres no nice flat straights for me to catch m breath,

So what part to do first as i dont wanna burn out to early?

I've got absolutely no idea what you're on about, but, may find out later in the year as I'm staying at a hotel in the area.

Whats the riding like and is it signposted?

I'd assumed it was a family friendly, manmade kind of place.
  • Yeah basically, very tame, but personally I think very enjoyable on a nice day. Gorgeous place, easy and long ride.

Fair enough, just been looking at Rutland Cycles, I think I'll give hiring a Dawg Deluxe a miss then!
  • Started riding round Rutland when I first started back in the Summer, think I was doing the 17mile route in 1hr 12 apx... Does get very busy in summer though and is tame as stated. Soon ventured further afield! Have a look on bikley website there is a alternative route marked out which utilities more bridleways in the area i think. Ill try find link and post it here when I get home!

It is very family friendly and you get a lot of families there (including me with mine!). My 5 year old has done the 17 mile route, so it's not exactly technical. There are some really nice climbs and descents, although there are some boring road sections. Although man made the trails are on dirt for a lot of it.

Good cycle hire shops if you fancy giving it a go on a tandem and a great pub in the south-east corner.

Take a spare tube - I always seem to get punctures there!

Well I did it. Monday just gone.

VERY windy, very wet second half, wish I'd taken a waterproof!

Nice ride as you all said. 2hr 5mins including peninsula from Barnsdale in an anticlocwise direction. The peninsula is the best part if your only going to do part of it imo.

Coming across the dam was fun, had 45 degree headwind from the left with driving rain so hard it hurt, riding with one eye closed and head turned sideways is interesting.

On a positive note, I encountered two other cyclists and maybe 8 or 10 walkers so no overcrowding problems, with favourable conditions (less than 20mph winds) the whole thing should be rideable in about 90mins.

Rutland water is my home ground! my Pb arond the outside is 52mins and 6 seconds last summer, but i havent tried to set a new record since. Reckon i could do it in just under 50 now :D Test rode a giant anthem there last weekend and did the outside and the peninsular in 1h20 but that included a stop at one point to pump up a slow flat, but still not bad for a bike im not used to...
I live in oakham so its where i go if i cant be bothered to plan a route. Its more like 25miles including peninsula, and its definately not technical. The peninsular is the best bit IMHO but its all good fun. There are a number of lines you can take which make it quite a laugh. But dont go midday on weekends during the summer..... way to busy.

Used to do a lot of sailing when I was younger and had a few races at Rutland each year. It always seemed to have it's own weird little climate

Road round the reservoir once, but I just remember it being long and pretty flat.

Unfortunatley the good routes are short and hard to find and so normaly you have to join them with a lot of road work. Near Brooke (south of oakham) there are quite a few nice tracks, especialy around leighfield lodge and up to riddlington (a bit hilly, but good fun). From there you can get to loddington and the likes. If you ride up to ashwell from oakham, just past the garden centre theres a turning off on the left which is a short bit of track, with a good challenging sticky (mud) climb, and then you cross a road and carry on with the single track and you get to the road which joins whissendine to langham. This is a very muddy route though, check my signature 'mud aero rims', as thats what it did once when it had been raining the day before. Also going towards coldoverton there are some footpath/bridlepaths. As i said its all exploring really and seeing what works. Around launde abby you can find a route through the fields and across some streams, although there is no visible path and its long grass.

Have you heard of the 'Worm' trail? Some guys on here mentioned it being in/around oakham, but i couldnt find anything on it.
