Ok. first off one of the small cogs (3rd from bottom) on the rear cassette cracked so had it replaced. That seemed fine and still is (I think) but then after 3 days up ashton court and leigh woods etc I notice my chain/gears slipping. I think nothing of it as it's happened before and it's just a quick adjustments of the cables. So off I set on Monday to work, 5 mins down the road and the bloody chain flies off

I want to get a new cassette and chain, and possibly a front mech & crank (I think (this is all too technical for me!))

  • XT cassette, and whatever chain you're happy with. Personally I like SRAM chains, but it's really down to personal preference as there's not a lot between them in my experience. You can get XT cassette and chain for 45 quid on ebay from woolly hat shop.

There's nothing wrong with your crankset, so unless it's knackered, or you're desperate to save weight I'd leave it. If you do replace it you wont go wrong with an XT HT2 unit. Bearing life might be a bit compromised but you'll benefit from decreased weight and increased stiffness. SLX another option if you want to spend a bit less, and in fact many rate SLX as highly as XT at only 40g heavier with comparable performance.

Front mech...does it really need changing? To get a better feel from your shiftinh you'll probably want to upgrade your shifters as well, but again, there's nothing "wrong with what you've got. an XT front mech is cheap enough, and you could always upgrade the shifters to XT later to match up your whole drive chain.

I got my XT cassette and chain from this seller last Summer and I've had no complaints.

Yeah I'd just get a new chain and cassette...Merlin often do deals on cassette chain combos..
