Tyres for Orange 5

Sorry to bore everyone with another what tyre thread, but.....
I've got an Orange 5 SE with mavic 819 UST rims. The bike came with 2.4 UST Conti Mountain Kings, which I have now happily killed.
I've currently fitted some non tubeless Specialized 2.3 Enduros with some of Stans finest solution. I am happy with the grip, but they don't half drag. I went for a fairly long ride on my hard tail which has 2.1 Panaracers fitted. I couldn't believe how easy the smooth climbs and flat tracks were. Now, either I was particularly super human or my 2.1 Panaracers roll a lot better than the 2.3 Speshs and the 2.4 Contis.
My question is.......
Do I really need big volume tyres on my Orange, it does have good suspension after all?
Merlin have 2.1 UST Nobby Nics for £60 for a pair. I'm tempted but don't want to feel like I'm riding on a knife edge.
Any thoughts?????

I'm running 2.1 high rollers on mine and the rear is fine, the front is a little knife edge. I'm going to try a 2.1 Kenda Blue Groove up front which is pretty huge for a 2.1 and might be a compromise between the whippet light high roller and the lush but heavy 2.35 Blue Groove I know and love.0

Mmmmm, maybe a 2.35 super tacky Highroller UST up front (if anyone has one in stock!) and a 2.1 Nobby Nic on the rear???0

Dunno about Nobby Nics, I've been given a pair from a mate who didn't rate them against high rollers, slower rolling AND less grippy.
I've not actually been able to bring myself to try them because I don't reckon they look up to much vs the other tyres I have at my disposal. Namely Kenda Nevegals/Blue Grooves in 2.1 and 2.35 (Stick-E) and High Roller 2.1s (62a).0 -
I wasn't sure about the Nics, but they have had some good reviews and £60 for 2 USTs seems a good deal to me.
I've been trying to find some of the High Roller LUSTs 2.35 62compound that Doddy mentioned a few issues back. But nobody seems to stock them, they're not even listed on the UK importers website.
I'd also considered a 42compound 2.35 Highroller UST up front and a 62compound 2.1 Highroller ust rear, but everywhere is out of stock at the moment.
Aaaaargh! I just want some new tyres!0 -
I am running a 2.35 ignitor Lust on the rear and a 2.35 High Roller Lust Supertacky on the front. North West MTB Centre has loads of UST High Roller 2.35 Super tackys in stock. Was in there on Saturday. A good combo but the Supertackys do wear quite quickly but have amazing leech like grip levels.
I did go for thinner tyres for a while UST still but they rolled excellently but felt fragile and ended up with I ripped Sidewall, so I went back to bigger / slighter heavier but ultimately more hardwearing tyres.0 -
Aviod the Nobby Nics mate.
Good climbers but thin walls and they dont descend too well - if anything they're too fast and not grippy enough to balance out the speed.
If you can stand the climbing weight and stick-Eness the nevegals are brilliant tyres. They descend and corner like they're on rails.
Panaracers - not on a 5
Michalin all mountain aren't bad but stiull dont match the nevegals. lets face it, you'll get fitter if nothing else!!It\'s a bit steep for my liking0 -
NNs don't seem to last too long.
All depends where and what you're riding really, though I'd stay away from any super tacky/ soft coompund stuff unless its lift assited...just way to draggy and heavy.
nevegals, rampages, cinders, rubber queens, minon, ignitor, ardent, Advantagefr swampt things etc
if you want fast then try somethign like the NN + RR combo or try variations of it..Minon FR + HR etc etc0 -
I swapped my High Roller 2.35s for a set of Rubber Queen 2.4s. They come up big, and offer loads of grip, but roll faster than the High Rollers. They also seem to be lasting well.0

Rubber Quens look interestintg although I had problems with my Mountain King USTs ripping!0

I just changed the tyres on my Five at the weekend. After much debating I went for a pair of Bonty Mud X tyres. Have yet to try them out but they get great reviews (at least by BikeRadar) and similar to the Jones ACX I have on my hardtail. Getting them on the Mavic 819's is a laugh, soapy suds on standby.0

On my Five I've tried Conti Explorer, Conti Gravity, Panaracer Fire XC Pro & Kenda Nevegal Stick E's, all in 2.1" (except the Gravity's 2.3")
Didn't rate the Conti's at all, they didn't feel very grippy, or predictable.
Liked the Panaracer Fire XC Pro's, pretty good all rounder
Love the Nevegal Stick E's, loads of grip, predictable, fairly light but still tough enough, a great tyre, my new fave in fact!0
