As stated.....

Recommend me some new tyres for my Orange Patriot. Currently running High Rollers, but thse are now fskd....

I ride the Patriot on everything from blasting through the local woods (some of it fairly DH), to trail centres (mostly Glentress) and also a bit of DH (Innerleithen and Fort Bill the only real DH tracks I have ridden).

I would like something that rolls fairly well, gets grip in the wet/mud, clears mud easily and lets me breathe underwater. :D

Basically I want a good all rounder, but as its winter time, would prefer better grippy/mud clearing, and less bothered about it being good on dusty trails (I live in scotland where dusty trails are a figment of the imagination anyway)

Opinions please. :D

    Wouldn't we all

Nobby Nics are 110% in terms of speed, acceleration, grip, clearing and light weight but they are expensive, fragile and wear out really fast. Maxxis CrossMarks are a lot cheaper and probably the ultimate trail centre tyre.

What was wrong with the Highrollers?

I only ask because those and Kenda Nevegals/Blue Grooves are what I'd have recommended.

For muddy/wet conditions, try Maxxis Swampthings 2,35 wide, 42a Super Tacky up front and a 60a Maxxpro on the rear.

    mobby nics are expensive eh!

Crossmarks are too narrow...only go up to 2.25, and only easily get-able in 2.1

I will look at the nevegals, and swampthings.....

zero303....nothing...I loved the high rollers, but they have needed replaced for about a month now......may very well just get more of them in the 60a rear, 42a front configuration.

    Cheers folks.

    any more for any more?

  • I use Michelin All-Mountain A.T. tyres.
They are dual compound so should last a while and I have no complaints with their performance.
They're designed as an all rounder and I'm happy with them.
Kinda hard to get a hold of them sometimes though.

I have Highrollers, Minions and Trailrakers for my bike, if I had to pick just one set it would without a doubt be the Minions.

They don't roll quite as quick on the black stuff as the Highrollers but they are not phased on any surface, if it's grip you want these are the best.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"
  • 2.35 ignitor rear and 2.35 super tacky high roller front. Both LUST of course as its the only way to run. loads of grip in all conditions, my favourite tyre pairing.

I have exactly the same choice to make but for my new 575. What do you chaps think to Racing 2.25 ralphs front and rear? Or Ralph rear and Nic upfront? Or Bonty Mud-X rear and Jones upfront? Ulimately which are better Ralphs/Nics or MudX/Jones? For typical trail and forest riding conditions?
    Cheers guys.
  • To be honest, just buy decent tyres and ride the thing.
I often think that people, myself included, get too hung up on the best this and the best that.
Just by decent tyres by a decent manufacturer and ride til they are worn.

I've had Panaracers, Continentals, Tiogas and now Michelins, and I'm sure I've decided that whatever was on the bike at the time was "the best tyre I've ever had".

Note to self: stop drinking on weeknights.

The new Ralphs are better than the older ones in that they have a better profile,at the edges for cornering, but I generally run,a Racing Ralph on the back with a Nobby Nic up front in summer and Nobby Nics front and back in winter.

Mud X are well rated and probably better value, than Nobby Nics but not as fast rolling.
Grppiest tyre always goes up front, faster rolling tyre on the back so if you were lookiNg at Mud X and Jones, together,Mud X goes on the front.

I ran a Nic F and a Ralph R during last 'summer' and for dry-ish days they're an unbeatable combination but as said above, Nic F&R is a better all-round choice. Deffo go for the 2.25s, the 2.1s are more like 1.8s.
