I rode a very, very nice bike today

A Wilier Cento 1, on a Wilier demo day.

The bike had Fulcrum 1s and 4000s tyres with Record 10 speed group set.

The ride was amazing the frame felt completely rigid but at the same time soaked up all the bumps. I never realised gear changing could be as precise and easy – not sure why we need electric gears with changing like that. Is it the levers that make the main difference between Record and Centaur performance or are the mechs completely different?

If only I had a spare £4500.

I had the older quick shift levers and groupset and thought the shifting was a bit rubbish for the money.
I then bought a new frame and decided to do a new build and bought all new 2009 centaur ultra shift ergo's and mech and chainset and the difference in shifting was unbelievable. So much more of a lighter action and accurate shift.
So going on that I'd say it was the groupset as I think record has been ultrashift for a while
  • I think that I read on Weight Weenies that the only real difference between the 2009 Record and Centaur is the indexing part that makes them 11 or 10 speed. They'd seen and been through the parts diagrams (like they do).

I've got 2009 Centaur Ergos and the improvement in the quality of shifting, as well as the shape of the hoods are all a bid improvement - that said, I quite like the positive shift of my older 10 speed Record (not QS). The big difference between Record and Centaur IME is the amount of carbon and titanium in place of steel, bearings instead of basic bushings and this year ceramic bearings too - out of the box the difference will be less perceptible, but give them a seasons use, the Centaur will be serviceable, but a little sloppy whereas the Record will still be as crisp.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
