What Tyres

Hi again,

I currenlty have a set of 700 x 23c tyres from halfords which have a maximum PSI of 100. I like to pump them up to the limit as i'm a big lad(all muscle of course). I've had some problems with valves blowing if i go too far over this.

Can anyone suggest any tyres that have a higher maximum P.S.I and also are inner tubes just inner tubes or are there specific ones that will take a higher P.S.I.

Your contributions are grateful.

Neil :)

If the valves are blowing off this would more then likely be a problem with the inner tubes rather then the tyres as they are seperate items.
The maximum ratings on tyres are there as a guideline maximum and not a target from my understanding. I recently got a set of Conti Gator Skins in 700 x 25C and whilst the sidewall says the max is 110PSI (iirc), the tags on the tyres recommend 95PSI.
I'm not a big guy (about 65KG) so I'm running them at the recommend pressure rather then the max and they seem fine at the moment :-)

I'd suggest get some good innertubes (I'm currently using Specialized ones as they where doing a deal at the LBS when I got the tyres) and experiment with the pressure.

    I run my Michelin 23c @ 110PSI and my standard Trek/Bontrager 23c @ 120PSI both with Giant tubes.

I prefer a hard ride for normal or damp and 10-20 PSI less for heavy rain or ice.

I'm not saying my weight but it's 10lbs more than before Christmas

I bought three inner tubes from halfords. The valve on all three sheered off when inflating them. I dont buy them anymore. The specialized valves are much more durable. Never had a problem with those.

My LBS sells the spesh inner tubes - never had a problem with them. Another LBS does the Bontrager ones - any difference there?

I run continental GP4000s's. Great for wet weather, far more grip than my old kenda's for both braking and cornering, they give FAR more confidence. They go higher than 100psi I think 120 max, I tend to run 120 at the rear and 110 at the front, It smoothens out the ride a bit being a bit softer at the front (where you dont need such high pressure as theres less weight over the wheel) I also run continental inner tubes, but thats pure chance as there was an offer on those at the same time as the tyres. Ive only once broke a valve and that was on some cheap brand tube on the old hybrid.

I run Vittoria Rubino Pro's on the commuter, GP4000S' on the winter bike, GP Attack/Force on the summer bike, and will be stesting Pro Race 3's when the new wheels are finally sorted. All are run at 120 psi and I use Vittoria or Conti tubes. Never had a problem with valves at all.
