Hi,
I am looking to upgrade my Orange 5 Shocks and would be interested to hear views on what would make a good package.
I ride a very hilly park and race occasionally.
I currently have Fox 130mm basic fork and a Maitou on the rear.
Thanks,

Any probs with either? Hard to identify what would be better. Are you after lighter weight, more adjustability?

Fox rear shocks are usually smoother and more controlled than manitous, and more reliable.

Well it isn't going to be cheap to improve on what you've got...

A fox rp32 on the rear ideally PUSHed by tftuned for better dampening as the 5 really needs a platform shock.

Up front a set of the QR15 fox 32 talas would be great for general riding and racing so you can steepen up the geometry. But you'll need to check for front wheel compatability. Once again PUSHed.

Like ride_whenever said take a look at the Fox RP23 It is a good shock
and has you do racing, you may find one of the Three pre-set settings
a bonus for the climbs or flats and flick the lever to fully open for the downs.

Talas for the front and the axle on the front will stiffen things up

For what spec you have I take it that your 5 is and 05-06 model
give Orange a call and ask them too, they might do you a deal on the
    parts?
  • I run my Five with a Fox RP23 rear shock which is great and a set of Rockshox Revelations dual air 426's at the front.

A mate has the Manitou 4 way on the rear of is and he reckons it is a cracking shock. prehaps your's just needs a service / bit of TLC. will be miles cheaper than changing as swapping front and rear shock will not be cheap at all. ( low end £600 -top end the skys the limit)

Two time Five owner with the excellent RP23 & very good Fox Float R140's (would have preferred the RLC, but too skint) on an '07 Five at the mo.

Had a Manitou Swinger 3 way & Float R 130's on my previous ('06) Five, the RP23 is so much better than the old Swinger3 way.

Also ran a set of RS Revelations on the '06 Five for a while, a very good fork, and better than the Float R in some ways, more tuneable & the compression damping was great at stopping the brake dive I sometimes got.

  • Thanks for your views. I'll be doing the Karapoti Classic in few weeks and I don't want to be bouncing up the long climbs on my current shock. I picked up that there are different set ups available for the Fox RP23 rear shock. Is this the case? I'll also contact Orange and let you know how I get on.
    Thanks

The RP23 has a 3 way dial & on/off switch for the ProPedal settings as standard, PUSHing the RP23 shock is a custom tweak done my TFTuned.

Both my Orange 5's had 190mm length shock with a 50mm stroke, yours might be the same, Orange will know which one you need (& maybe sell you one?)
