Am I lazy?

On my rear mech I usually just set the cable tension to the smallest cog with the shifter fully out, then shift all the way up and adjust the screws so it is in line with the top cog.

It's not flawless, the second smallest cog needs two clicks to get to, and it skips the 4th largest cog, but it still goes through it's range.

Should I be trying harder?

  • check ther tension again when in the small cog, took a couple of attempts on mine to get it spopt on but yeah, thats basically how i set mine up, pull cable through so no slack, set lower limit and shift up, mines good but has a bit of a jump from 3rd to 2nd but is fine on the way down, just cant be bothered to fiddle and twiddle the tiny bits!

oh, check your mech hanger too! coul;dnt get it right for ages, swapped the hanger over and was nigh on spot on! (then changed the cables hahah!)

  • Mines got a permanent hanger, Looks straight though. Might try greasing the cable, then pulling it right through hard.

sounds like you can not be using all the gears.

read how to do it correctly on parktools.

Also check that you are using compatible parts.

  • Might pull my finger out and adjust them properly. Parts are defo compatible, 9sp XT shifter and mech. Cable needs renewing too I think. Can't be arsed to do it now though, which is half the problem I think!
  • if you go the new cable route, XTR's are Very good! make it feel like there is no mech on the end of it!

  • I have a complete cable run, which is neccessary due to my frame. The problem is that standard length cables are too short and lead to the shifter being pulled when the bars turn. Currently I use a long outer with an XT inner. Ideally I would be able to get a very long XTR inner and outer, but I've only ever seen the XTR kits that are for broken cable runs.

just go to a bike shop and get a length that you need.

Outers come in 30m rolls and inners are long enough for most bikes.

  • That's what I did last time. My inner is already starting to fray. I once used that braided outer but it wasn't long enough, so now settle for standard outers.

I might invent a bluetooth electronic self adjusting gear system. It seriously can't be that hard.

Bluetooth shifter to mech = push button touch system

Magnetic cogs + electromagnetic sensitive jockey wheel = self adjusting system

Servo operated mech requiring a AA battery = cheap

    Shimano - do it now!
  • you can get the xtr inners only through CRC etc, and also the outers SP41 through most of the onliners either by the meter or in a 5M/10M pack.
