I've decided not to wait for either myself or one of my mates to loose my/their face before investing in a full face helmet. the problem is the usual which one do i buy! We ride all the south wales trails but mostly brechfa red and black trails so need something well vented and 'fairly' light. Can anybody recomend a decent full face helmet? I really dont want to spent anything over £100 but if there was a good deal i may be tempted.

Cheers

Just got a 2007 model 661 Pro Bravo from CRC for £59!

Not the lightest or best ventilated full-facer in the world but when you reach 37 you don't bounce as much as you did when you were 18, so worth every penny I reckon!

  • You don't really have much of a choice as you MUST buy the one that fits you correctly.

Don't make the mistake of buying a helmet that doesn't fit you as it's meant to just because it looks nice.
    Try on EVERYTHING!
I tried on a Specialized Deviant, T.H.E One, Giro Remedy, Bell Drop, 661 Evo, you name it, but the only one that fitted me right was the Fox Rampage, so that's what I bought.

I ride a motorbike too and I know that your lid is the most important bit of kit you'll ever buy, so make damm sure it fits you right.

  • The fox rampage is just under £100 and looks damn good too!!
  • I thought I'd won a watch when I bought my Rampage from a bike shop in California via ebay for only £70 with free worldwide delivery.

10 days later a tax bill for £23 arrived which I had to pay before Royal Mail would deliver it.

    Bugger!

    I have a 661 strike and a 661 flight (flight arrived today).

The build quality of the 661 helmets is very good but the i find the fit to be on the tight side, my strike is xl and is slightly too tight but the flight is xxl and is spot on although the measurements of my head suggest a XL :?

If your not bothered much about fashion or if it is an old model, CRC have a flight xxl in the sale for £60. :D

Better to have a lid thats a bit too snug than sloppy - the padding will compress over time and confrom to the shape of your bonce.

When do you guys wear your full facers?

Done Dalby and didn't think it was necessary there, but tried Stainburn over Xmas [black run] and thought the place was lethal [was icy].

Tempted by the helmet offers at C reaction, but don't want to blow up to £100 if i'll never use it.

This is true, I say my Strike is tight but it is to the point where on a long ride it hurts my face (squashes my cheek bones).

The flight XXL is still tight but is much more comfortable. Choosing the XXL was an educated guess with having the XL strike and knowing what the measurements were.

I do highly recommend going to you LBS and trying them on to get the right fit though!! :D

I wear my full face at Glentress where there's plenty of opportunity for big speed, big air and big pain.
My mate broke his collar bone there a few months ago, and it was only his Bell Belistic full face that saved him from a very sore mug as well.

You can see what's left of his lid below.

For more trail-based riding I use a Fox Flux.

I tend to spend a lot of time riding on my own, but I like the harder and faster technical stuff. Being at the older end of the spectrum (you don't bounce when you're 37...) and having kept my boyish good looks in tact for so long I tend to take mine along for the ride if I'm mucking about on my local trails.

I find that I'm now riding fast enough on some of the more technical stuff to feel that I would injure myself quite badly if I came off at speed. If it means the difference bewteen a broken jaw or a few ringing bells and a walk home that'll do for me.

It sits on my arm on the climbs (I don't climb quickly enough to hurt myself if I fall off) and I just wear it on the nadgery bits.

The same will become true during the summer for the trail centres - on for the interesting bits, off for the climbs.

As you've said, places like Dalby, Llandegla, CyB (in the majority) I wouldn't consider it, but for the likes of Stainburn, Wharncliffe and some of the more freeride/DH oriented stuff I'd consider it essential.

I'm also planning on doing some PROPER mountain biking this year (with real mountains involved) so it will be coming along for those trips too. No need for a helmet when you've got the bike on your shoulder and a rock-strewn two-feet-and-one-hand climb, but it might just save my bacon coming down...

    Cheers for the replies.

May just pop for the Oneil Fury then at £48 and see whats it's like i the local woods/stainburn. Guess sizing is the issue though, have a large bonce and take an L [59-63] for my Giro Havoc xc helmet.

    Tape measure out tonight!

Sorry to keep repeating myself but my advice to you would be to still try it on.
My head measures as a medium but of my 4 motorbike helmets 3 are medium and one is a small, and of my 3 mountain bike helmets 2 are mediums and my full face is a small.
Find one that fits you then see if you can buy it cheap on the net.

    Here endeth the sermon.

when to use a full face or not..... when you think the protection they offer is greater than than the porblems of haveing one on.
Its a personal choice, I will happerly blitz round dalby in my normal helmet. But after a recent crash just b4 xmass at stainburn i would not go near that place with out my full face on. ( crash was at the first large rocks just as you get out of the woods on the DH run bike kinda wonderd off the side in to hte bog...... me falling face first in to a tree stump )

But i see every time im at stainburn i see people normal helmets haveing no issues at all.

When do you guys wear your full facers?
When riding with faster mates, on very rocky, rooty, steep trails.
But when riding with slower mates there is no need.

And I agree with davree about the sizes with 661.
I have a Stike too and a head size for size M helmet, but my helmet size is XL.
At the begining felt tight, and I could barely put or take off the helmet off my head, but
now it's fine. It's easier to remove it and don't feel that tight any more.

Sizes aren't correct for all heads, so as everyone says, you must try before you buy.
  • thanks to all for advice and info. in relation to when to wear a full face, i agree with the majority that its when you feel that coming off has the potential to do damage to your self, big style!!

I've been looking about, not so much at the asthetics of the helmet nut more price+reviews and am looking at possibly a Bell Balistic 2009 for £49 or an O'Neal Fury for a pound less, both on CRC. Any one have any experiences with these?

Mate, the O'Neal Fury and the 661 Strike have the same outer shell.
I've found out that few months ago.
The outer shell is the same, but I do not know about the inner paddings.
But my 661 is very nice and strong and if you can save money buying Strike with
different name and maybe better paitjob then I would say go for it.

yes but the cheaper full facers still offer the same amount of protection, are just a bit heavier.
