I've been looking at this ebay auction and was wondering if the vintage bods could give me a few pointers!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0147507337

Basically, I'm interested because of the unusual measurements (long ST short TT which suits me perfectly) and the fact that it's a nice simple old road/path frame which appeals after a few years of looking at Bagpuss' classic lightweights threads :D

Am I right in assuming the following?:

It's a very plain (nothing special) Comet track/road model dated somewhere between '53 and '63 (post Holdsworth takeover).
The seller is on crack with his BIN price and given the state of paintwork might only be worth say £100?
There is likely to be very little interest because of the frame dimensions

Thanks in advance,

Graham

  • I had one of these frames. Bought it about 10 years ago as a complete bike for £75. Paintwork was better than this one on eBay.

Sold it about 5 years ago after hving used it for grasstrack racing (loads of clearance for 32mm tyres and handled well).

    £100 for F&F only is a lot.
Recipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.

375 quid?!!! Seller is (as always) atryer by name, a trier by nature.

Personally I wouldn't go more than fifty without benefit of assessing the structural integrity of the frame - internally! Might be OK other than for a re-paint. Might be scrap.

There's very little interest because most people will run a mile from an ebay seller like this. You should do likewise.

holdsworth path ends with little notches for chaintugs.

I'll offer him £75 if it doesn't sell - the sizing makes it worth it for me - we'll soon find out if he's a chancer or just deluded.
  • A club member was going to give me one of these to proud to take him up on it

Judging by the state of the paint job, i'd be seriously worried about internal corrosion - replacing a main frame tube and a respray will be £100 plus. Get the seller to email pictures of the underside of the BB and chainstays.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    Monty,

Thanks for the pointer, but the seller is under the illusion that the frame is worth a fair bit more than the £92 closing bid. Never mind - I'll have to just keep my eyes open for a similar 'stumpy top tube' frame!

Re-listed and a photo added to it: f76c_1.JPG

This might be worth a punt at a tenner but this does confirm that the seller is on crack.

Finally sold for £104, plus £20 postage. It's true, there is one born every minute.

Bet it went to some sad fashion victim in London.

With the potential dangerous corrosion on that thing a tenner sounds like too much.
