Gore Cables

I have just bought a set of SRAM X-0 shifters without the cables - I could probably use my current X-7 cables, but thought I might splash out on some decent ones.

If I went with something like Gore Ride-On cables, would I have to change the cable again if I change the mechs at any point?

You wouldn't have to change them. However, I put Gores on (just to try them when I needed to replace my XT cables) and TBH, can't tell the difference. If replacing again I would just go for XTR at less than half price of the Gores (I needed two sets of Gores for the full runs).

Hmmmm see my post in buying advice...

I did consider them and also the Goodridge which are available in carbon outer too.
  • There is a full length teflon liner. If you changed the mechs you might not get away with re-using it, it would probably be too short if you switched to Shimano for instance.
I only run Gore to the rear, as I find most front shifting problems are with the mech rather than the cable, and also I take my left shifter/front mech off through the winter.
When I finally have to change the rear cable (it's been on two years and I have never even re-indexed the gears) I shall maybe cut it down for the front.

It would be SRAM X-9 to X-0 if anything so that should be ok for the rear

And LX to XT/XTR at the front - so should be ok there as well then.

Are these really that good? Better than XTR / Goodridge?

For the front, liner length doesn't matter much, you cover the exposed cable to liner with a rubber boot, and theat can go essentially anywhere.

Beware that on the back mech with X0 (and I assume same problem with X9) the rubber boot gets mangled by the mech and never really covers liner / cable as it gets pulled off. Not a biggie though, just not as sealed as you may have thought.

Hmmmm ok - thought the reason for the extra over say XTR was the fact that they were sealed though?

Well, they are... and they give a way in the instructions to modify for the SRAM mechs, just that, even with that, the mechanism gets very close to the boot, catches it and mangles.

As I said though... doing again I would go XTR.

Has anyone tried the goodridge ones though?

Used their braded brake hoses with car and motorbike before and were very good.

Well i use Gore ride-on cables on XTR shifters and mech's front and rear and i gota say i think they are one of the best mods i have made, I had 9 month old cables on before the change and i noticed the difference straight away, smother and less stiction (?) if that makes sence + the fact they are fit and forget so to speak made them a well worth while mod for me ? Highly recomended in fact i have just bought a second set for my hard tail build :)

Mmmm!! They're a bit tasty, don't quite think I could justify the price though
