Specialized Tricross or any similar Cyclocross bike.
You've got the drop handlebars and most of the speed of a road bike, yet you've got the strength and reliability of an off-road bike with full rack and mudguard mounts and an extra set of brake levers on the flat part of the handlebars.
Plus they look sexy and I've got one.

If I was buying a new bike just for commuting, I'd look at a cyclocross bike too. The Tricross in particular is good looking and, I believe, has attachment points for mudguards and panniers if you need them.Today is a good day to ride0

Spend £200 max on building a fixie from secondhand bits - the rest on a nice holiday or a very big Tele.....I plumped for the holiday myself!0
