Honestly, ride what you feel comfortable riding - though i would not advise a road bike

Either Hardtail or full Sus will handle Afan fine, though obviously you can be slightly less selective of your line if you use a full sus.

What do you have at the moment?

  • I have a Hardtail at the moment, been upgrading the parts as I go... XT Cranks... Mecs etc... LX Hy Discs... Mavic wheels... Captain Tyres etc... been riding local trails mailnly....80% Flat but as soon as you get on the rough stuff it has already sent me over the handle bars once (Bit of a nutter sometimes)... But wanting to get more into the more technical stuff...

Living in Northamptonshire its not easy as no trails... Hence why looking further away!!!

Keep reading about different trails and the rocks, dropoffs etc. and then start thinking that maybe a full sus would be better.... Help my back as well!!

Been looking at an Epic but also moving towards the Yeti 575..... Seems to be able to do everything I want to do plus more!

    What do you think???
  • I tried the Spec Stumpjumper last year and we didn't get on..... Over the rough stuff was good but very bouncy/hardwork when on the flat.... Saps your energy!!!

Maybe this was due to the bike not being setup correctly as the reports on this bike were very good!

It takes time to set up any bike to how it suits you best. And don't forget if your position is slightly wrong on the bike or you get the wrong line you will end off being removed from the bike regardless of whether you have FS or HT.

I would honestly suggest heading over there on your current ride and seeing how you get on, you might find that you are perfectly fine with the HT - and if not, there is a hire shop there where you can hire a FS to compare to
