Trouble removing brake pads - with pic

Hi, I need to replace my pads on my Shimano BR M525 Deore disc brakes and was expecting a small clip going into a pad fixing bolt. However, on my brakes there is just a really big clip:
How can you remove this? Tried to force together the clip ends with pliers but hard to get to and scared of snapping the bent bit off. Also will it not force its way open half when its half way removed (i.e. in between the two side of the caliper) making it even more difficult to remove?
Again throwing myself to the mercy of bikeradar's finest! Any tips greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Joe

squeeze the left hand ends together and then pull out from the right."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

The split pin won't snap as long as you're not brutal with it. Mine have the same. Just starighten the pin with a set of pliers and the pads will drop out.0
