XC and XCO

Could someone please tell me what´s the difference between XC and XCO.

I get that XC must refer to cross country, right? But I have tried in vain to find what XCO means on the internet... I can get events listings, but no explanation as to the difference.

Any ideas?

    Mountain Biking events, I guess. I´m not entirely sure, hence the question.

    For instance, I know the following:

    DHI = Downhill
    TR = Trials
    XC = Cross Country

    but these
    "Austria MTB National Championships - XCO"
    or
    "in 2009 the World Cup calendar has one less XCO event and Fort William was the one to go"

    -- What´s the XCO mean?
