Tasked with finding a good route in NW - help pls!!

Hi, I've been designated with finding a good route for a day trip. I live in south manchester but am willing to take the train an hourish in any direction. The two of us going have been riding for years but mainly easy local xc mainly for fitness. Looking for something a bit more varied with a few ups and downs and nice scenery. Looking to get more into it this year, not a skilled map reader but willing to learn! To give you an idea I ride a maxlight pro2 and my mate a rockhopper. Any suggestions?

    Get up to Todmorden. Loads of riding from the station. In fact Dave_Hill's organising a ride this Saturday (see the pudding burner thread) which will give you a good intro to the delights of Calderdale / Rossendale.

    If you can't make it PM me your address and I'll see if I can print some routes out for you.
