Is there much difference in warmth between the Mid-Light and Mid-Thermal? as I am considering getting a pair of sealskinz, I was looking at some cheaper socks like the Cannondale winter mid sock but after running a search here the Sealskinz came up a lot.

Need something as my feet start to get cold in my reebok classics even with 2 pairs of socks on although the last couple of days have been colder than normal.

  • Is your priority keeping feet warm or dry?
I use Sealskinz mid light, but whilst they are very good at keeping my feet dry they aren`t as good as a pair of merino wool socks for keeping them warm.If you want warmth try something like Woolie Boolies.
Haven`t tried the thermal version of Sealskinz though.

  • I use Sealskinz Mid-thermal and find they are perfect for keeping my feet warm, got them here http://www.outdoorgb.com/b/sealskinz/ they have a few different types and also have some cycling gloves which I'm rather interested in, sorry I'm going off the subject!
I also find pedaling faster makes your feet warmer!

Get the warmest Sealskinz you can find.

I use SealSkinz MidLite with a thin cotton mix sock underneath. On top I wear 661 SPD Duallys or skate shoes (depending on which bike/pedals I'm using) which are a half-size bigger than what I'd take normally.

Even in the weather that we've had recently, my feet have been toasty so I'd say that the ordinary MidLites are perfectly good.

If you do get your feet wet (providing you don't go over the top of the socks) they'll feel a bit colder initially, but should then warm up again.

That said, SealSkinz have just launched a calf-length version of the MidLite so there should be a problem with getting water in them anymore unless you go up to your knees!

Keeping my feet warm but keeping them dry would be a bonus.
  • After complaining about the warmth levels of the thinner Sealskinz, I took Dave's advice and got some thin cotton undersocks. Much better now (cheers Dave).
  • I got my dad some of the thermal ones that use merino wool for Christmas and he said they were good when walking in the lakes @ 850m.
I have the mid light and had some thin socks underneath on Sunday and after 2-3h my toes were feeling a bit chilled (it was as cold as I would be prepared to ride though!). Think I might get one of each tbh because I ended up wearing the thinner ones half of last summer anyway.
Either way they are well worth the money which ever ones you get.
  • Just make sure you have room for thick socks in your shoes. If they are too bulky, thick socks can restrict circulation to your toes.Best to try on with your cycling shoes before buying..
