Interested on recreational riding, commute and tour. Seeking suggestions on my first road pedals, with priority on confort and easy release.
What system is better for my style of riding: SPD, SPD-SL something else?)

I would say SPD, easy release and comfy, the main benefit is that the shoes for these allow you to walk off the bike so ideal for touring and commuting (when on tour I use Shimano MT90 walking boots that I wear all day on or off the bike, so only have to take one pair of shoes). Shimano M520 pedals are also a bargain at £17.99 delivered from Merlin Cycles.

Are SPDs (eg Shimano A520) compatible with Nike granfondo WR shoes (2 bolts) or only with Shimano shoes?

SPD's are 2 bolt cleats and these will fit.

Personally I would prefer double-sided pedals (M520) over single sided (A520) as there is always the right side facing up, so no fumbling.
