Cane Creek headset question

Hi, I am about to purchase a Cane Creek ZS 2 Headset for a GT Avalanche Expert frame.
Could anyone tell me what the difference between the 1.1/8" short and a 1.1/8" short is?
Is it just that the tall version would cover more of the steerer tube? Meaning that less spacers would be needed??
Also would this headset be suitable to fit over the crown race on my steerer tube or do different types of headset require different races???
I'm unsure as I've not used this type of headset before and I've struggled to get help from GT's website so would really appreciate it if anybody could answer these questions!!

you will need to change the crown race to match the one with the supplied headset.
