i'm thinking of getting a kaffenback drop bar but I'm just wondering if anyone has one, and what they think of it.

If anyone has any other suggestions of other bikes I'd appreciate them bearing in mind however i'm looking for a bike for, touring, general road riding and tame off road (muddy paths basically) it has to have good clearance and gaurd and rack mounts are a must. i need to get 32c cross tyres on it.

So planet x kaffenback, steel frame and fork which i love, everything i want plus 105 shifters/mechs decent planet x wheels and nice finishing kit, i love that planet x seatpost! all for £733!

Thanks

  • I've got one I will sell you.

Large size, steel forks. 105 BB, Chainset, rear mech, shifters & tektro mini-v brakes, wth Shimano 105 wheels and mudguards. Can't remeber what the handlebars are, I think Deda, Selle Marco saddle and I think a Deda seat pillar.

    Recently serviced, with wheel re-trued.

It is 12 months old and I used it to commute on for 7 months so only has 2000 miles on it.

The Kaff is a great bike - handles far better than the portly frame would suggest. I had a mk1 version where rear wheel clearance was a bit tight - the newer sand-coloured are improved. I liked mine so much I had it copied in titanium with a bit more tyre clearance and disc brake mounts - it goes anywhere and can take anything thrown at it, from chain-gang burn-ups with skinny tyres, to single-tracking with knobblies.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • woodford2barbican sounds like a nice bike, i'd be very interested, for the right price of course, is there a private messaging service on these forums where we can talk??

thanks for the helpful info Monty dog i've decided i def. want one

Another Kaffenback fan. I hate the sand colour but fortunately I picked up one of the old blue ones, which is gorgeous. Mine is used as a winter bike so has full mudguards and bomb proof wheels. I've even raced it in a triathlon and it performed remarkably well. With a good set of wheels I don't think it'd be too far off a cheap race bike.

I had a sand one for a while (I prefer it to the blue) and a very nice bike. Coincidentally I've just been looking at the P-X catalogue an hour or so ago: it remains a "good buy" compared with equivalent contenders I reckon.

Hi, I have a one as well. Just to note that if you like you're saddle in a forward position you'll have to get an in-line seatpost. Otherwise it's really comfortalbe and handles well. Running mini v's makes the braking excellent although clearance between the concentina rubber, mudguard and top of my marathon plus 28mm's is a little tight.

Hi - if you want to email me use ames_john at hotmail dot com - I will take some pictures for you over the weekend

This is some of the spec,

    Shimano R600 Compact 10 Spd 175 34/50
    Shimano 105 5600 10spd Bottom Bracket
    Shimano 10 Spd 105 5600 Cassette 12-27
Shimano 105 5600 10 Spd Rear Gear Short
    Shimano STI Levers 105 5600 10 Spd
    Deda Metal Stick Seatpillar
Fizik Bar Gel Set & Black Microtex Bar Tape

The wheels are R550 shimano's (I think, will have to check) the saddle is a Selle Marco,
stem and handlebars also Deda (I think). These all came off a 2007 or 2006 Focus Cayo so should be half decent spec.

There are some minor marks on the frame, cable marks on the head tube and a couple of minor scrathes to the paintwork. But that is it and nothing notable.

The levers have a couple of scrathes from a clipless moment at a set of lights - the only time that this bike has been involved in anything resembling a crash. The only real damage was to my dignity.

The tyres are spec armadillos and will be due for replacement soon but have a decent amount of life left in them.

I will keep the pedals which are just bottom of the range shimano SPDs.

Email me if you want me to give you a price.
  • thanks for all the help guys i'm in the process of organising the sale of the bike mentioned previously in the thread!

As matter of interest Monty Dog, who did you get to make the copy? I've been thinking of approaching XACD with a similar plan (but without exact dimensions of the Kaffenback to hand, then this could be a problem come to think of it..!).
