Is anybody else struggling to keep riding due to lack of funds due to the credit crunch, due to a severe downturn at work i am finding it difficult to make ends meet and it seems everything is starting to go wrong with my bike and i cant justify spending the money on it anymore, my stanchions are marked on my forks which is causing them to leak so a new steerer and a service will be £200, and the bottom bracket has started making funny noises today so i fear the worst, roll on 2010 when hopefully it will all be over

well fix the marks on the legs. (look in the MTB FAQ's) and fit new seals.

  • Cheers for that i might have a go although i will probably end up needing a new set of forks. they are not scratched as such, the anodising has worn off in places they are fox rl 120 forks and they have gold coloured stanchions and where they are marked it is silver in colour and start under the seals and go up the stanchions about 2 to3 inches

Ah. that does happen due to not enough lubing and cleaning.

Not much you can do unfortunately for that wear. but you may find some forks with bust lowers on the e-bay.

well, I work in finance and no doubt it's hard at the moment. I can keep riding, but this year (just in 2009). trip the whistler is now back to Morzine and I'm not changing my XC bike as planned. Still if I get made redundant I'mn off to Seriara Nevada (sp?) for 3 months during my gafrdening leave.

Happy new year yall, I'm hammered.
  • Are Reba,s as good as fox float forks, as if they had new stanchions and were serviced, for £ 200 they would be as good as new , my mate had exactly the same problems and he went down this route and after considering new forks he said this was the best solution

  • BANKS LEND MONEY THEY DO NOT HAVE! Most money is created literally from thin air as debt. That is to say, a recession is planned, engineered, designed, intended, to a very large extent. When they stop lending money they do not have, there is no new money!

We aint gonna be out of this one for a while. History shows us this. The last few booms n busts have taken 10-20 years to play out peak to peak, trough to trough, centre to centre...... plus lots of things are occuring that should get you thinking. 911, Iraq, North Sea, .....oil and debt money is what drives the whole god damn shebangs shebangs.

As for bikey stuff. No. I can't afford a family house in this crappy country, but I can afford to keep me bike nice, but I can't afford to keep the LBS in business for all my needs. I mean, they charge 30 a side for building a wheel, CRC (and others) only charge for the parts. It's a no brainer.

It hasn't always been this way. After I left uni and went to work, my student debts were so high I couldn't afford a new chainring! My bike often got into a crunchy slippy ouch fuck me state. I remember standing there in Evans in the year 2000 thinking how the fuck can I not afford a chainring now that I am a graduate with an ok job? Damn I wish I hadn't borrowed (and spent) that money the bank never had!

Nowadays you get a lot more for you money. £100 today gets you a full set of very decent discs. 10 years ago that would not have bought you half a set of anything decent. A decent hardtail frame in 1996 would have set you back 300 at least. You get more for your money now (thanks Taiwan! You've been great!), but we do a lot less of the manufacture. Which is a shame. Maple leaf flags command a premium, as does Made in Wisconsin, and we still got Hope here in the country that is terrorized by its elite and so very very grey.
