cycling edinburgh to lancaster

I am thinking about cycling to visit friends in Lancaster . I will be starting from home in Edinburgh and would like to do the trip in 2 stages .Any suggestions on routes and also god places to stop overnight ?

    If I were you I'd follow NCR1, via Dalkeith, down to Innerleithen. From there I'd head across to Langholm on the B709, via Ettrick. There I'd pick up the A7 down to Carlisle and then take the A6 to Penrith. This section is about 200km and there are a number of hostels/bunkhouse in Penrith.

    Not sure of the best way from Penrith to Lancaster, but you could stick to the A6 to Kendal.
