9 speed chain on 8 speed drivetrain?

My mate was having a problem with his gears skipping, so I took a look. Rear derailleur was indexed properly, but the chain lifted up on the sprocket every couple of revolutions.
Checked the chain and he had a SRAM PC951 (9-speed?) chain with a silver (8-speed) powerlink on an 8 speed cassette.
I didn't think different chain/powerlink combinations would even fit together.
Is this causing the skipping?
And should my mate be angry with the shop that put the chain on?

An 8 speed power link will fit on a 9 speed chain because the chain is thinner. The chain is more than likely be causing the skipping due to the chain and cassette not aligining correctly i would have thought?0

It would work, but far from ideal. I'd get an 8spd chain.
Sounds like a possible stiff link as well.
Yes, I would be angry with the shop.0
