Indoor Trainers

Hello!

I wonder if anyone as any experience of indoor road trainers? I'm keen to maintain my cycle activity through the winter, but due to work am about to hit a period of getting home late and less likely to be cycle commuting. I had considered hitting the road at night but realistically I am less likely to get in the saddle and do this....so I am considering a trainer for my attic conversion, so I have somewhere to ride without fuss.

I have no experience of these at all and wondered if they are worth their while and if there are and brands or specific models to look for or avoid???

Many thanks,

Charlie

I've got a Cyclops something or other - it's so long since I looked.

From what I've heard and read, the Cyclops Fluid is quieter than the model I have, so that would be worth looking into if you're going to be on the turbo during "unsociable" hours.

If you use it, it is worth your while. I've yet to get on mine. I find every excuse I can not to use it.

  • Indoor trainers are a great idea for as long as you don't hate them. In my experience, that's about a week. They are hideous. I used to have a cheap fluid trainer which shredded my rear tyre. And was dull as hell. So then I got an imagic with the steerer unit - full virtual landscape on the computer screen with steering. And that's as dull as hell too. It just took slightly longer to find that out.

I would rather do almost anything than sit on an indoor trainer.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

...I think going to a gym and using the static bikes, or even a spinning session would be more motivating than using a home trainer...unless ofcourse you are training to race...

I bought a trainer and have used it twice, as they guys have already said - DULL!!!!!

I found an alternative which is only slightly less boring, laps of the block around my house, either 1 mile or 2 miles, it means I can ignore most of the long ride kit/prep and i'm never more than .5 mile away if the weather turns to nasty.

its almost as boring but at least i'm not on the trainer.

  • One of the big reasons why I like cycling is that I'm outside, going somewhere.

That is the same reason why I will never buy an indoor trainer - I'll enjoy it for about 10 minutes then put it in a cupboard and never use it again.

The money the OP is looking to spend on it would be better spent on some really good lights (see the roughly 9 milion light-related threads) and some warm gear!

Oh and I also do a 5-mile lap around 'the block' near me in Essex if the weather is bad, it's quite fun if you time it and race yourself.
  • 20 minutes with music every other day is about as much as I could handle. Don't have any winter gear and got this cheap, so is my only option until I MTFU.

The actual workout is pretty good though; the one I have got is a fairly decent make and can choose resistance settings as you ride so you can push yourself hard on it.

Dull they are , as others have said. I only paid about £30 for mine from SJS.
It's OK to use if you have a sore throat , it's freezing outside , and you think that sucking in cold polluted air would aggravate your delicate condition.

I wasn't going to admit the racing myself bit
