Protuberance on inside of right seat stay ?

What's it for ? It's about 6 inches above the rear axle on the inside of the seat stay. It looks like maybe the chain would fit nicely on it. But I cannot imagine why.

    Probably to hold the chain when the rear wheel's out.

    Swarfega smells so much nicer than latex. I suppose hanging the chain from the thing makes the bike look a bit neater when it is being transported without the rear wheel.

    It's not really any use for transporting the bike - doesn't hold it well enough.

    It's only to stop the chain resting on the chainstay when you've got the wheel out - e.g. if you're changing the tyre or something.

    Not something you see too often on modern bikes but I always thought they were useful.
    I'm left handed, if that matters.

    My old Raleigh had a chain peg for such instances and you could buy a chain peg that bolted into the dropout or you could make your own with a 1/2" bolt and a couple of nuts and washers.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
