I bought an "off the peg" Peugeot Performance 5000 road bike several years ago, which has not seen much use until the guy who runs our village cycling club persuaded me to join in on the weekly runs a few months back
The terrain locally is quite hilly, and i have been really struggling with the not having low enough gears for the routes I have been doing with the guys
My bike spec is as follows:-
Shimano Exage 300EX front and rear changers
7 cog cassette at rear - 26 teeth on biggest ring and 13 teeth on smallest
An "Omega Linea" chainset (Stamped Italy 170). 52 teeth on big ring and 42 teeth on small ring. Rings are held on by 5 allan key type screws. Allan type screws are approx 2.5 inches from centre bolt that holds chainset to crank shaft
What do I need to do to change the gearing to make uphill sections easier to tackle ?? Where can i source any parts required, and approx cost. Also, would my existing Shimano front and rear changers be able to cope with any changes to the size of rings on cassette or front rings ???
Any advice given would be greatly appreciated

Easiest and cheapest is to fit a smaller inner chain ring. You need to check the BCD (bolt circle diameter) of your chainset. It will be either 130mm or 135mm. Measure from centre of the ring fixing bolt to centre of BB axle and double it. If your 2.5 inches is acurate it is 130 which is Shimano size. This will take a 38 tooth ring.
Spa cycles do Stronglight ones for £11. Wiggle or CRC will also stock similar items.
