Hi!

I'm looking for a set of new tyres as my current tyres on last legs, currently have the standard Bontrager on trek EX8

I wan't a tyre for trails like Coed Y Brenin and Llandegla which tend to be wet but not neceserally muddy.

Someone has recomended :

Bontrager Mud X TR
Schwalbe Racing Ralph
Panracer Trailraker
Hutchinson Toro

I need a front and rear so are any of these specific or are they all uni directional?

Thanks in advance!
Ride : 09 Trek Fuel EX 8

Maxxis high rollers are pretty damn good at owt.Kenda nevegals(stick-E) are good but draggy.Tyres are a mine field what suits one person is another persons hell. Its all down to riding style/weight/conditions etc.I personally hate Panaracer tyres.
Generally for trails centres most decent tyres will be ok.Its when you go onto the (better)natural stuff that it gets complicated
If you're happy with the bontys get a new pair of them?

    High rollers 62a or softer...
  • I got a Highroller for christmas but when I ordered it the only one i could get in time to be given to me was a 40 super tacky. Which is too soft really, I can't imagine it lasting very long at all.

Ive got a 60a rear and a 42a super tacky on the front, the front is looking worn after just a few Peak District rides
  • Maxxis Highroller are fantastic, they are the ones that i run just now, in 2.1 size. They are directional and run the same front and back! Would definetely reccomed them they are really good!!

Are the Highroller 2.1`s very small ? I prefer a bit of volume in a tyre and have heard this tyre is very narrow for its stated size.
  • No not at all, they are very good and give great handeling, i must reccomend them!!!
There size it great for things as long as you dnt do major freeride, what type of riding do you do?

Unless you're a weight freak, go for the High roller 2.35's - not too heavy and loads of grip in North Wales terrain.

Not freeride ! I ride an FSR XC and like a tyre c. 2-2.25 ish. Have read a lot about High Rollers so might be tempted when I replace my Captains.

A lot of people like panaracer fire xc, but some hate them.

I got a pair for x-mas, and have not fitted them yet, so they are working out quite well so far, 2 weeks and no wear.. :o
  • Im not a weight freak, but i justbelieve that the 2.1 tyre are more than enough for my to hit the trails with!!! I live in scotland so i find them good in the mud, so i presume they will also match Wales conditions. But if you prefer a bigger tyre you can still get the high roller in a bigger size!!!

  • Im not a weight freak, but i just believe that they are more than enough for what i do, and i live in Scotland, so i get properly muddy conditions!! Probably similar to the ones in wales, but they are wide enough in my appinon and they still give you great control and stability!!! And of course you can get the Highroller in a bigger size!!! the ignitor is also a great mud tyre!!!

We don't get much mud on the trail centres here in wales, just rock and gravel - hence the 2.35's, more shock absorbing!

    Panaracer:

Rampage 2.3" up front and a razer mx on the back.

The rampage is an fantastic tyre, fast rolling, good in mud and grippy, the razer is almost entirely slick and therefore comes up quite small, more like a 2.1", and these are a great tyre.
  • Really, i find that hard to believe, in scotland it always seems to be raining here in Scotland!! What type of tyres do u currently run?
