Guys ..got into MTBing at at just over 60 ..crazy maybe but we only live once !
I'm 5' 10" & weigh 77 kg & want a good soft tail, for racing triathlons ie about 35mile bike splits BUT after swimming for 35mins ..ie XTERRA stuff. To me lightness is VERY important - poor old bugger that I am..Seems lightest soft tails come in at around 25lbs ??The Tech stuff leaves me cold ..just want a good bike to get me round as fast as poss. The Specialised Stump Jumpers seem a good range - can afford to shell out around 1.5k . Could find more if there's an EXCEPTIONAL bike out there ..
ALL contributions gratefully received
Happy New Year !

Softail is usually a term for a bike with a minimal amount of rear suspension - almost hardtail like in appearence, usually with just an inch or two of travel. I take it you want a full susser with a bit more than that ie the Stumpy you mention?
If lightness is important, then hardtails are the best bet - but you will sacrifice comfort.
There a a number of decent bikes for this price, both full suss and hardtail. There isn't a best though, I would recommend testing a few out. A few XC full sussers to consider would be:
Giant Anthem
Scott Spark
Mongoose Canaan
GT Marathon0
