Hi there.
Just taken ownership of a (xmas) 29ss with a gear ratio of 38/20T. Front is way too high.
Question1
For xc riding with a small amount of climbing, would I 34 front still be too high so should I go for 32?
Question2
Ive got a deore triple I can nick the 34 middle ring off as a test. I believe the chain on the bike is a SS chain. Will it work for an hour or so test ride?
Thanks

Answer 1
29ers are traditionally 36 x 18 but going upto 19 or 20 on the back if it's hilly.
Don't go messing with the front one once you've fitted the 36.
Answer 2
Might be alright but go for a 36 front and have done with it.
Buy the long lasting Surly 36t Chainring from here http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/userimages/procart4.htm0 -
Ta JM.
Those rings look good.
Will do a test fitst with my 34 deore ring for the right gearing before i take the plunge on a proper ring.0 -
It's much easier to keep changing the rear cog, but make sure you get them with a wide footprint.
Cheap ones are cut out a sheet of metal and are the same width as the teeth where they engage with your hub. So thin ones dig into your hub ones that taper to a "wider footprint" don't do damage to your hub like thiner ones do.
Check out Charlies site for these wider based cogs as well as http://www.sidewayscycles.co.uk/0 -
32x18 works well for me and I can get up as much as geared friends can so 34x20 may be ok.0
