I am looking to have a nice set of wheels buit for me. For my Pitch Pro.

Fire Eye, DMR Revolver, etc all look nice but I don't want to discount Hope. The Hope is currently a turn off because of that damn aluminium freehub. You'll not convince me that it will be ok for me. I don't want an aluminium one, and neither do I want to waste £50 buying what should have come with the hub in the first place.

Can the Pro II be purchased with the steel freehub body? Anyone done this?

No, but forty quid will get you an XT cassette from Chain Reaction which won't damage the freehub rotor.

I've got two sets of wheels with Pro II hubs, neither of which has the steel freehub rotor. I'm not exactly light on components and neither has given me any grief in 2 years, or looks like doing. Granted with the older set I've had to change the springs once and the bearings once but that's nothing to do with the rotor material

Having said that you already seem to have pushed the Hope hubs right to the bottom of your list anyway, so why bother?

I think Hope shpuld give you the option - or a Ti body even like XTR. Thing is if they started putting steel bodies then it would weigh more than the magical 300g, and probably the same as the latest generation XT hubs.

With care, and a better cassette they can last, but I have seen heavy riders with XT cassettes eat through them.
  • That's the thing. I weigh 15 stone. I got 26in thighs. I can properly squat 200kg for reps. I think an aluminium freehub is asking for trouble. I don't give a shit about an extra 50-100g or so. If I did, i'd trim my 36 waist down to 34........

I think there are many things that should never be made from aluminium and freehubs is one of them.

I'd go for the cheaper Revolver then - at 50 quid can't go wrong!
  • If I was going to go for the Revolver - I'd go for the new 6 pawl version I think. Who makes these? Quando? Formula? Can these be converted to 10mm bolt up or 10mm QR?

I also think the Fire Eye hubs look real nice with some nice options, but the company is unknown to me....?.

I just wanted a bit of English on my bike that's all. I'll phone Hope and see what they say, but alu freehub IS is a deal-breaker.

I just don't understand what these companies are playing at sometimes. Why do they insist on pandering to weight weenies? I mean, the days of skinny xc bikes is long gone. Now is the reign of chunky bikes that can do chunky stuff. Yet the designers seem to be in conflict. Chunky frames, chunky forks.. wheels that are wide and chunky yet still retain the legacy for saving a few grams by cutting spokes??.

Then they insist on making chains narrower to the point probably when only 10 year olds or anorexics or asians can ride bicycles; and we still got stupid aluminium chainrings!!!! and now... aluminium freehubs! I mean of all the things that shouldn't be made from aluminium! Rant over.

As for rim choice. I am interested in the

    Halo Freedom (Syncros DS28)
    Mavic EN521
    DT E540
    DT5.1...
    Sun EQ29.
    Spank Oozy

They are all similar weights. 500g or so seemed reasonable for a slightly heavy rider and an enduro bike that will get chucked and thundered about but not jumped?

    32 or 36.. I'm thinking 36 DB or 32 straight guage cos I don't give a shit about 25g....

    Any thoughts?
  • bump.. just need some guidance with regard HOLE choice.

I weigh 15st. I can slightly kink a freeride 32H.. just wondering whether anyone here goes 36 rather than 32 and why?

36 would give you added security... and DB build a stronger wheel ;-)

Though if regularly thrashing rims, why not get a EX721?
