New bike...but what KIND???

Not sure quite where to post this, but here goes anyway....
I got back into cycling, having not ridden for 40 odd years, when my son gave me his old full-sus DiamondBack MTB. I'm sure this is not the right size for me, however, and I've promised myself a new properly fitted bike in the new year.
However, I'm not into off-road MTB-ing. I really fancy myself on a flash Road bike, but would like to venture onto the local gravel tracks occasionally, with possibly some commuting (I am a contractor so move jobs) and some touring in the summer(???). Oh, and I use a Tacx Sirius TT.
And, I'm maybe getting ahead of myself but, some low level competition seems appealing.
So....what kind of bike would be appropriate? Do I get a proper Road bike and keep the old ill-fitting (i.e. shoulder pains) MTB for the off-tarmac forays? Or get a Hybrid?
I'm confused and don't want to make an expensive mistake.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, glad to hear that you are thinking of getting more into the cycling disaplines and since it has been 40 years you have a lot of catching up to do on what is currently the best of breed. I would suggest spending some quality time with your son and travel around the local shops to find out what you can demo and see what trips your trigger when you ride it. It would be foolish to suggest a bke for you as half the fun is trying to find the one that fits you and even upgrade the parts depending on how much you want to spend. I also suggest t that you buy your son a new bike as well since he was the one that showed you how much he loves you and riding the bike. Get the same models and go for rides together as it will provide you more value and memories regardless of what you buy:) enjoy and good luck. I am 52 and still race cross, road and long distance mountain bike rides. It keeps me yound especially when we get on the skate ski's in the off season!
Be safe and let me know what you buy you and your son....0 -

...the reason he gave me his old bike was that he bought a much, much, MUCH more expensive one!!! He and his partner are heavily into adventure-type stuff, rat runs'n'all that kind of stuff. WAY beyond what I want to (or COULD) do...
Thanks to you other guys...I guess a Cyclo-cross bike seems to fit the bill.0
