Just a quickie. Does anybody have bike insurance? I'm not talking about public liability, but actual insurance for the machine to protect against theft, accidental damage, etc etc. After forking 1600 quid for my new machine just wondering wether its worth while paying for it. I know it sound like a no brainer, just don't know if its similar to car insurance. Will I be completely protected. Cheers Tony.

M&S home insurance always comes up on these threads. They insure bikes up to £4k without you having to list them.

Yep. That's who I'm with. It's a great overall package, not just in relation to the bike insurance.

Most home insurance will cover bikes, just make sure you have enough cover. Mine covers the bike anywhere in the world for theft and for accidental damage..... which is handy when transporting it round the world and putting it in the hands of airport baggage handlers.
  • Also with M&S and it's hard to find better cover. My bank wanted me to switch to their home & contents, but they would only insure bikes up to £1k as an additional cost to their Elite package. Consequently, I'm still with M&S

You should consider checking out whether the insurer will pay out on a new for old basis should it get stolen etc and if so for how many years. Some insurance companies will factor in depreciation which on a 1600 bike can be more than you might think and leave you with a big hole in your payout.

You should also consider If you ever take the bike in the car and leave it in there for any time, and how about leaving it anywhere overnight that isn't where it usually 'lives'.

I have always used butterworths which I get a good deal on through my CTC membership and they pretty much cover most eventualities and also give good no claims discount, security tagging discount, worldwide cover and cover on accessories/clothes etc.

I don't have any commercial interest in them by the way but I would say that you will struggle to find a better specialist bike insurer especially for expensive bikes 1k upwards.
