Been to to Halfords and seen the Boardman pro a=on sale for £999. Looks a real bargain with durace and carbon bits and bobs. Anybody got any thoughts about their suitability for sportives?

i had a look, but the 53/39 chainset and the "racing" rather than sportive geometry (for me, 57cm effective top tube and 170 head tube) put me off. When I looked there was an additional £100 off, so it was £888. Fantastic value.

For the hillier sportives, unless you are v. strong I think you'd be looking at a compact (50/34) chainset and, depending on your flexibility/preference, a longer head tube, such as available on a roubaix (or even an allez or tarmac), trek 1.9/madone or synapse.

For £888,it would be a superb buy.If gearing is an issue, you can pick up a decent compact through cycling weekly etc for a very reasonable sum.
As for the fashion of having a longer head tube to give a higher position, get the shop to fit a few spacers under the handlebar stem.
