Hub recommendation
My bro wants to build up some wheels for an old bike he's doing up, and I said I'd get him some wheel hubs for Xmas.
He's builing a 7-speed, so can anyone recommend me some hubs that are compatible? Looking for 105 or ultegra type quality, but I'm guessing the new 10 speed freehubs won't work so well.
Cheers

it depends on how old the bike is. If it's 126mm he'll struggle - this is a possibility but uses non-standard cassettes:

Better to have the frame set to 130mm if it isn't already (LBS job or see Sheldon Brown for the home mechanic big bit of wood method), then the world is his oyster. No need to stick to 7 speed (I don't think anyone is making 7 speed 130mm hubs these days but I may be wrong) - better off fitting modern kit once the dropout width is right. It depends on whether he is renewing the whole drivetrain and shifters, which it sounds like he is.
The cheaper option is to service the existing hub provided the races aren't pitted and rebuild the wheel with new spokes - the old ones have no doubt seized by now where the nipple threads on to the spoke. It probably means sticking to downtube friction levers but there's nothing really wrong with them!0 -
Thanks for the reply. Think I'll just get some nice 8 or 9 spd hubs and he can work it out.
He's building new wheels although I have absolutely no idea why he wants 7 speed.0
