Spacers...

I've been thinking (yea i know, it hurts!!!) about when i come to fit my forks to my frame.
Obviously i have to cut the steerer to length to be able to fit the stem properly, but how do i know it will be the correct size? what if i suddenly realise I should have had a spacer in there? i'm not saying i will do...but what if? if i cut the steerer too short and the geometry is off then i donald ducked!
Any advice/recommendations?

Measure...measure again...and again...add 20mm. Job done ;-)
You can always add spacers above the stem.
If you decide it needs shortening after that then so be it.
Measure 36 times, cut once ;-)=========================================
Dot 4 in the eye hurts. Trust me0 -

Easy.
Cut the steerer too long to start with. Fit the star-fangled nut (if you're going to use one) as normal.
Then, assemble the forks into the frame with the stem sitting immediately on top of the headset and put your spacers ON TOP of the stem.
Ride the bike. If you feel that the bars are too low, remove the stem, move it up the "stack" of spacers and reassemble.
Keep repeating this operation until you feel comfortable, then trim the steerer off and away you go!0 -
Ahh, so add a couple of spacers before, ride, se how it is/what combination feels best, if needed trim the steerer afterwards?
one other question i've just thought of, does the crown race come with aheadsets? (i'm hoping yes)0 -

That's the idea! And yes the crown race does normally come with a new headset.0 -

You can get away with about 40mm of spacers. I'd keep them on, keep the steerer long - better resale value!0

true I guess. Cant see me wanting to, but it is a possibility... will any spacers do? a set of brand x?0 -
All spacers do the same, the simplest of jobs. Carbon are lighter, Hope cost more because it says Hope on them.0

Bike came into the shop a while back, Viper full carbon frame, with about 70mm of spacers. Was stongly advised to remove some..."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
