  • They all look good and each has a good reputation, but it is a sign of the recent price increases when you see that most of the bikes at this price point ,have only Sora components. This years Allez has a fantastic looking frame, though.
I have tried Sora equipped bikes, and though they are perfectly functional I am not a fan of the thumb operated shifters, and of the slow front mech performance. If you can I`d see if you could get a bike with Tiagra shifters.
Before you buy have a look at:http://www.ashcycles.com/power/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=830
I`d also look at the Boardman bikes in Halfords which are very well specced even in basic form..They have very good reviews and start at £600.

    2010 Giant Defy Advanced
    2016 Boardman Pro 29er

Have you thought about a Raleigh?
I really like the look of them but i know not an exotic name.
Rutland cycles are selling the Airlite U6 COMP carbon fork and rear for £500 Buy now on ebay in 56cm and 58cm
Its RRP is £750 so i think its a good deal
    Got tiagra instead of sora

Focus variado 2008 still available in S and M sizes. Just over £600 for a decent 105 equipped bike

Ribble do good bikes in this pricepoint, they have a bike builder on the website that will give you a well specced machine for this kind of cash and you're buying british.

you can source a cannondale with tiagra for around £600 ...

    eg. http://www.bikebike.co.uk/products.php? ... 1s247p2042 or http://www.tredz.co.uk/ProductList.asp? ... Cannondale

the frame will stand component upgrades in the future (but not required immediately as not the absolute basic) ... which is far cheaper than having to buy a whole new bike one ro two years dwon the line if you really get into it ...

there are similar deals to be had on other quality frames if you look around ... from my gf's experience don't buy a trek tho ... the alu. ones are a horrible ride (she had 2 trek bikes, a £500 one and a £1300 one and hated both, esp. the £1300 one) ...
  • How a Be One from Chain Reaction ->http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=25459 for £499 reduced from £799 mostly 105 with the exception of the chainset and all sizes available.

  • +1 on that be-one seems a bit of a bargain :)

I posted on here recently about my eventual choice, an Orbea Aqua Fleche with Tiagra front and 105 rear mech. This can be had in 09 spec (totally different bike to the 08 ) for a very reasonable £550, giving you £50 to spend on beer at Christmas!

I looked at the Specialized Allez and also the Cube Ariel, but went for the unusual choice and am really pleased with it. It uses a frameset also employed on far more pricey models.

If you deal with Dave Hinde you are making a deal with the devil - see this (bike specs not as advertised - he is still misdescribing the weight of the bikes here), and this (absolutely scandalous treatment of customers), and this (an ASA adjudication against Dave Hinde - and there should probably be more).

Use them at your own, probably considerable risk

With regard to the Trek 1.2 - if you could stretch to the 1.5 you'd be getting the same frame which is used all the way up to the 1.9 at c £1200. The 1.2 is a different frame.

There is always a slightly better bike for slightly more money I know, but the difference between 1.2 and 1.5 seems greater in terms of spec than price... if you're with me!!

    I love mine!

Of the list I'd go for the allez, but this is only because I am a big specialized fan and like the geometry of the allez.

I'd agree that a good bike could be put together at ribble for £600 - look at the spec of redraggons winter bike - it was under £600 IIRC
