I joined the recent 'off' club tonight.....

Circumventing a small'ish round-a-bout in central Stockport, (near the viaduct) heading East, about 3/4 round, just passing twin lane entry (quick traffic approaching) one car stops, one doesn't...a little Fiat.....

F........ bang bump ! F*@#

I had just enough time to effect a broadside into the Fiat car that was doing 25-30, otherwise It would have been head on. Impacted the door, front wing then was duly dumped onto the tarmac - no time to put hands down.... helmet bounced off the road with some force.....

Driver stopped, I swore some as I tried to get up nursing the pain....... she was rather shocked..."sorry didn't see you" - I pointed to my 10 lights and reflective kit......

She was very apologetic.....said I'd be OK and I'd phone her later when I got checked out.....details exchanged

Not much damage, bike's got a scuffed bar end, new XT pedal and QR skewer....clothing intact, me, some deep bruising on shoulder, thigh and just below my hip.

Got some anti bruise stuff on, so see how it is tomorrow.

Will be just asking for a contribution to a hew helmet....don't want to risk it - it took quite a bump, but visually is OK other than a scuff.

If she messes about, then it's British Cycling's finest onto her.....

And there was me, not an hour before, saying to a colleague, "you have to take it easy near Christmas with the tipsy and/or rushing drivers....."

Just called her - she was OK - mentioned that bike was OK, but the Helmet took a knock - she's agreed to send a cheque - gave her the model, and where to look for a price. Her car now sports a dent in the bonnet and a scratch. 8)

Some deep bruising? And you're only going for a new helmet?

Sorry, but if you are suffering from deep bruising now, you'll be feeling much worse over the next few days. If you had 10 lights on your bike and person, her driving was far below the standard required.

I suggest that you do not, repeat not take any further action until you have

    1. Have had your injuries checked out in more detail and you know how bad they are (my deep bruising from a similar hit took 6 weeks to come out fully (bone bruises)
    2. Had good legal advice via BC.

One of my friends thought he had got away with minor damage, but it turned out to include nerve damage which affected his riding for 12 months. Having done something similar to you, he had already signed a waiver for further damages and had enormous difficulty in getting more compensation.

I won't be signing anything - just waiting a few days till I see how I feel.

If I'm rough tomorrow, I'll report it !

Well, she's got to report it in law, so I'd recommend you do too:

I hope you will be upgrading your helmet whilst at it. Something around the £120 mark should help clear the evidentfog from her eyes. I got knocked off a few weeks back. Only bruising and scuffs on the first day but i was aching like mad and had a sore shoulder for days after, and that was a minor knock. Seriously, make her cough up. It will definitely make you more nervous riding that roundabout now and so she should compensate for the mental damage she has inflicted ;)

Oh, my work also insisted in went to my GP who was very very good about noting down the injuries and didnt make me feel at all like i was wasting his time. You should get everything written down.

Personally I would make these idiots pay every penny possible, otherwise they won't learn.

I know the round-a-bout concerned, drivers push their luck all the time at that location.

It's not a case of SMIDSY , it's a case of I couldn't be bothered looking or driving with due care and attention.

up, I reckon 9 out of 10 SMIDSYs are actually a case of SMICBBTLAA (Sorry mate I couldn't be bothered to look at all).

Yes, but I don't think that the millitant "everypennypossible" will necessarily be helpful. Although it is a good idea to cover all the bases, and although you have suffered as a result of an incompetent driver, there doesn't appear to be any malace, so why respond with any?
  • I too know the roundabout, the one near the crown?

I think that fair renumberation for the damage caused, replacement of kit is acceptable, becuase you can sort it between yourselves and it will be quick, if you start to try to wring people dry its going to take ages, and be a whole load of ball ache.

hope you dont feel too bashed up!

Near Travis Brow, GT Edgerton St - I was heading North to RB, turning right past Travis Brow and onto Gt Edgerton St - Travis Brow is where the car came from - tis a fast approach...always thought it would get me one day.....

Right, reported, but although no-one needed medical treatment, and we exchanged details, it wasn't necessary to report...although the chap took all the details just in case for me. Police were fine about it, and what had been proposed - I explained that her car took more damage.....

Well enough to ride in, sore shoulder, slightly tender hip and head.

She'll pay for a new Pneumo, but I'll put in the extra towards a Bell Volt.... not into stinging folk as the bike is OK - TBH she was totally 'sh1t up' by the accident and she's been reasonable.

Nice to know I still bounce well at 39...thought I might not bounce quite so well as when I was in my 20's......

  • Glad you're OK mate. You may feel more pain tomorrow when the body's natural adrenalin wears off.

I almost came a-cropper the other night on a mini-roundabout on a T junction but where bikes can go straight over so for me it is a crossroads. A car on the right of the T flashed me to go (from a standing start) I got as far as the middle when I knew the car from the left of the T was going far too fast to stop and the bloke (I assume) just hammered through with me turning the front wheel 90 degrees to save losing it. What was worse the car about five metres behind just put his foot down as well and flew through  There are times when simply shaking your head and saying out loud WTF just don't seem to cover it.

    Stay safe mate
Pain is only weakness leaving the body
